New Mizuno drivers are hitting stores soon and we got a chance to put them to the test in the THP Tech Studio. The latest iteration represents the culmination of the company’s 3-year, rapid-fire driver development project.
Before jumping into the video and testing, we want to mention one of the more fascinating aspects of the drivers, the new SAT2041 Beta Ti face. What does that mean? SAT2041 stands for Super / Alloy / Titanium / 20% Vanadium / 4% Aluminium / 1% tin and it offers 17% more tensile strength and 8% more flexibility than traditional 6-4Ti. In other words, stronger and faster than previous offerings.
“Most of our ST200 tour feedback was on the sensory side, a desire for a sound our players generally described as solid or dense,” said Chris Voshall from Mizuno. “We spent the next year working on improving feedback, hand in hand with releasing the additional ball speed we knew was left in our SAT2041 Beta Ti face.”
Unlike many videos which feature us testing the equipment, we figured we would do something a bit different today. We brought Chris Voshall into the Tech Studio and had him put both heads to the test and discuss not only the differences between the new ST-X and ST-Z drivers, but also the changes made from the last release…all while he hits balls in our hitting bay so you can see the ball flight and hear the impact sound. Watch the Mizuno ST-X and ST-Z Driver Review below.
Mizuno ST-X and ST-Z Driver Review
Shaft options are aplenty for those looking for choices. The ST-Z standard shafts are Project X EvenFlow Riptide or HZRDUS Smoke Black RDX as well as a Fujikura Motore X. Switching to the ST-X the options are the same EvenFlow RipTide from Project X or Motore X as well as a light weight Mizuno option called MFusion. All of which will be available in the fitting matrix software called the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer 3D you can find at retailers.
The Details
In Stores: February 2021
Cost: $400
Shafts: See above
I believe that Mizuno is currently about 6 weeks out on custom orders.
I was told last month that my 3 wood would be around 5 weeks. I’m right at 4 right now so hopefully next week I’ll see it.

Mine came in yesterday. Had a chance to hit them on a launch monitor today. Just awesome. Ball speeds over 160MPH for the driver and 150MPH for the 3-Wood. The feel and sound are incredible.

If any of you are on the fence about a fairway wood – just do it. It’s completely worth it.
I’m skipping on work sometime this week to hit up X-Golf again. The feeling of hitting the thing is so addictive, I might just have to add a driver to the mix.
well that is what might convince me haha. I “need” a new 3 wood haha. Need is in quotes because really I enjoy my callaway Rogue, but the shaft just isn’t it……. but i mean, people are loving these FW apparently haha.
just my opinion but these are not THE easiest to launch. easy? absolutely. but not the easiest. what i think i have found is that these are the the easiest to launch without having excessive draw bias.
sounds like a pretty big win there. my main miss with my current 3 wood is a low left bullet that just draws. Although that is mainly swing related and the fact the shaft is completely useless in it haha.

the 5w has been so freaking. and i cannot get over how long it is. for a FIVE WOOD. personally, i like to look down and see some loft. it makes me feel more comfortable, like i don’t need to help the ball in the air. i had intended to turn this down to 4w loft to fit my gapping, but at 5w loft it’s gapping like perfection. about 20-25y short of driver off the tee, and about 25-30y longer than my hybrid. that’s kinda perfect imho.
i’m struggling to think of a fairway wood (or maybe even any club) i’ve ever hit with a sound that i liked more than this stz fw.

I think for those that play them primarily off the tee, it’s going to be impressive. A lot of times with deeper fw woods, CG raises, so glad to hear it’s still an easy launch.

Yup, this is why I’m SUPER curious to hit it off the turf, I want to SEE the launch there for me.
Definitely looks built to be a murderer off the tee though.

as a low ball hitter, i’ve been incredibly impressed with the launch and carry of the stz at stock 5w loft. it launches better and stays in the air longer than any fairway i’ve played. closest comparisons would be og vsteel or rogue (without the nasty draw bias). you’re also right about it being impressive off the tee. it. will. GO.

I assume 5 wood to 5 wood, rather than lower lofts, right?
WRONG.
I agree considering it is also called a 3 wood. No one says you have to hit a 3 wood from the fairway.
the driver was once called the “play” club. So where should you hit that??

i’m not sure. whatever off the rack is. og vsteel was bonded, rogue was bonded, but stz is adjustable. i haven’t touched the loft sleeve on the stz since i bought it, so i assume it’s stock.
EDIT: if you’re asking if those others i mentioned were 5w, the answer is yes. i like a 5w!

don’t be scared. the stz launches crazy good. i tested it against the ping g425 max 5w, and on my best strikes with each the stz carried farther by a few yards and was a few mph faster in ball speed. it also didn’t want to draw like the 425 max did. and while i’m not saying the 425 max is the highest launching fairway out there (i honestly don’t know would get that title), but i would expect the 425 max to be one of the easier launchers out there.

I’ll follow you in to battle on this debate!
Worries about the ability to launch the FW’s from the deck are completely misplaced. The ST-Z is slightly less deep than the ST-190 and that one was not only fantastic off the tee but a cinch to get in the air in all situations. Easily the case now. Both 3-woods are around 183cc’s with the ST-Z even being a hair longer from front to back.

Remember though, it varies on the person. Historically speaking, deeper faced fairways are harder for many to launch off the deck. The conversation wasn’t one diminishing the club, just genuine conversation.
And man, those are good looking fairways. (y)
