While they have been known about for a while now, today PING Golf makes it official that their newest G-Series iron release is joining the family. Yet another piece to the puzzle when it comes to the plethora of 2024 iron releases from PING, the G730 seeks to tie things together in a bow by being the brands most easy to hit iron in their arsenal.

PING G730 Irons
Although we are actively seeing PING attempting to reposition themselves in the market as a company that is on the leading edge of innovation, their historical roots are very much about making golf more enjoyable through forgiveness. That is what the G-Series has always been about, and with the new G730 irons, distance, launch, and forgiveness are front and center.

The main goal here was to increase ball speed, as if you could nitpick one thing in the previous G -iron releases, that might be it. To do that, hyper 17-4 Stainless Steel was put through an advanced heat treatment to increase durability which allowed for a bigger face that is also thinner than before. That added flexibility has increased the speed potential significantly, according to PING.

By adding a larger face, they have also increased the confidence over the ball for the target golfer of the G730’s. However, they wanted to manage the sound/feel as well so a new PurFlex cavity badge has been implemented so that its multiple flex zones control the face flexion as well as the feedback. Combined with the face change is a wider sole, lower CG, higher MOI, and more offset. Again, the name of the game is ease of launch and maximum playability.
The Details
The new PING G730 irons will be available in 5-PW with UW, 50, and 56 also an option. The irons will be offered in all three loft options (Standard, Power Spec, Retro Spec) for more detailed fitting potential, but the standard lofts themselves have been optimized more than ever for proper gapping throughout by PING. The stock shaft options are True Temper DG Mid 100/115 or PING Alta CB Black graphite shafts with many additional shaft choices available as well. The G730’s will be priced at $185/club for steel and $200/club for graphite.

Those look good for what they are. I’m interested to hear what they sound like.

That’s a good call. The last ones left a little to be desired there imho
I think these look pretty meh. I’m sure they perform but not for me
I think of Ping having it’s own unique look. These look generic for Ping. I am sure they do what they are meant to do.
The notch on these is worrying but assume these have been put through the ringer.
Cavity is about as good looking as I’ve ever seen on this series from PING.
Ping has used that notch for YEEEEEAAAAARS now, there is no concern there.
Very well aware. Looking more so as far bending lie with that thin of a bending point.

Again, they’ve used it for years, and it’s for the purpose of being able to bend the lie angles. It’s been tested forever now, and it’s a cast iron so concerns should be small.

This was my immediate takeaway as well.

Cast would be more of the concern when bending the lie angle as it isn’t as subtle when bending like forged.

Which is why the notch is there.
There’s quite literally no durability concern with the notch.

forever.
Not my ping iron of choice, but these look pretty good.
This one’s a bit confusing for me on where they’ve gone with the look, and it’s place among others in this space at that price.
They look better than the 430 with similar bounce, and offset but stronger lofts.
I hope they improved on the Purflex as I found it underwhelming on the 430.
I would take a serious look at getting these and offloading my Stealth which has gapping issues.

I had a set of G5 irons around 20 years ago and they had the notch.
Not my style of iron, but these are very well done.
I just saw these at a Ping fitting van that’s at one of my clubs and they have less offset and a thinner top line than the 430.
They actually looked at felt really nice.

I believe it’s there to facilitate bending. They’ve been doing it a long time and I see similar in other makes. There’s still plenty of steel so you’re not in any danger of shearing the head off.
I know that. This series has less material than most around the notch is my point. With the cast being what it is for bending is why I’m tentative on the way it’s shaped.
@Hacker67 ”at one of my clubs”
Nice gig if you can get it huh?
Where is that? Looks like the southwest?
Going to order a set of these this week. Worked with the Ping fitter today at a local vendor days as I’m losing swing speed. The G730 outperformed the G430 and my Mavrik Max with regular flex. Fitter put me into the Alta Quick 45 (sr flex) shaft and it transformed things for me. Typical 7-iron ball speed gain of 10 mph although comparing best speeds I saw up to 20 mph. Vs the Mavrik, better dispersion and higher launch from a slightly stronger loft. Decent feedback on mishits. The lighter weight allowed me to get around better and I was actually hitting some pulls/draws, which ain’t normal. I instantly felt comfortable with this club. I’m not one to ask about looks/sound, but nothing ewww-worthy jumped out and they felt very nice.
Always interesting to watch a fitter who knows how to use both a launch monitor and a calibrated eyeball.

I
Played nine with these yesterday. No range time or chance to dial in distances, but some observations nonetheless:
As at the fitting, these felt comfortable at address and during the swing. Playing an AVX, contact was pleasantly firm. I got feedback on mishits. Not as much as some other GI irons I’ve played, but enough. Very forgiving on mishits. I put a serious slice swing on an 8 and still wound up in the second cut off the green.
The biggest surprise was how frequently and easily I was hitting straight shots. That’s completely foreign to my game. Bottom line is that out of the box they feel very familiar in a very good way.

I put a set through the wringer this week without issue. Definitely not the easiest but nowhere near the worst either.
I think I’m about to do something dumb. 🙂

Did you?
That huge hosel notch is a deal breaker for me. Being a steep swinging, high spin player, easier to bend is a double edged sword I am not interested in fighting with.

Not easier to bend. Gives them the ability to bend because of the materials used.
The notch has been there for 20+ years and is a nothing burger.
I’m sort of considering these. It could be just me but I’m 47 and have dropped 60+ lbs in the last 6+ months. I feel like I’m picking up swing speed and the R flex Alta shafts in my G425 might not be the best option for me. I played the G700 in the past. I wonder if these or the G430 might be in my future. Or maybe reshaft my G425.
Pretty easy to miss how much @ss these are kicking out the world. Just a great looking and performing iron and seeing a lot of success because of it.

It’s an interesting offering from Ping. When the G7xx line came out the first two generations were hollow body and differentiated themselves from the G4xx line.
Now with the 730, it went to a normal cavity back that is a little larger profile than the G430. I could see many people trying both and not seeing much difference in them.
For me, I wish Ping would do something a little different shape wise with it, like make it more of a hybrid iron offering like the Halos or Trails or something wide and squatty like the Stealth HD. I think Ping could have really had something there. So I think it gets a little lost in the shuffle. If you are saying they are a hot seller for Ping, then props to Ping. Being a big Ping guy these just didn’t move the needle much for me. I have hit them and they do fly high and long but they were really low spinning for me. I could see them being great for somebody who flips and adds loft to the ball. But for me who swings slower and plays a draw all these stronger lofted irons are starting to lose me without needed to bend them all weak.
Your order a full set or just a couple?
I hit one of these the other day with some beat up range balls and a regular flex stock setup. So each to launch. I didn’t think to post anything because I didn’t want to search the thread but if you’re looking for easy…. this falls in that category
These really are a great looking club for the segment they are in. Not horrible sound or feel either.

Thanks. I’ve decided to get new irons for ’25 to replace my G710s and planning to try both the G430s and G730s. From what I’ve read, the G730s are pretty long, so it could be 9i, W, 45 and 50 for me as I’m guessing G730 9i will gap pretty well with my 7H.

I’ve demo’ed the fitting 7i quite a bit on the range & a par 3 where I know my exact carry with 6h – i believe you’re correct in that 9i – 7h coverage thinking.
I just hit the 730 way more consistent than 430 – the i530 were a consistent as well – just absolutely detest the mishit feel

I ended up getting the G730s – 8i to 50*, so I’m planning to drop the 7H and just go 5H and 6H. What surprised me in the fitting is that I ended up with 1/2” short, black dot versus the standard length, red dot like my G710s. Additionally, the Quick 45 was the shaft ended up being the winner. I have ordered an Alta Quick 45 for my 6H to test.

Out of curiosity, were you able to hit the 8i or did you have to hit the 7i fitting head? If the 7i how did you make the determination to start at the 8i?
I hit the 7i fitting head versus my G710 7i. I had actually intended to start with the 9i, which I thought would gap well with my 7H, however I hit the 7i pretty well (better than my G710 7i) and so decided to start with 8i.

As @Oldflgolfer noted above, the G730 8i is pretty close to the G710 7i, so I decided it would work.
Also, my 6H is set at 31* so the gapping should work.
Sounds like a plan. I thought maybe the shop you got fitted at had a full set to hit. Very rare but I have seen it here and there. oh and good luck with the new sticks. keep us posted how they work out for you. Really cool bag setup you got going there !!
