Off Course is back this week with a fantastic show and this is episode 171. Hosted by Dan Edwards, each Friday he gives you a deep look into the world of golf and equipment in a way unlike any other podcast has done before. Today, Zack Oakley from Callaway Golf joins the show and the discussion centers around their latest releases including the 2023 Callaway Apex Pro irons.
It wouldn’t be Off Course without some tangents, but Dan and Zack talk about the Callaway Apex Pro irons and comparing the lineup. This show has a lot going on and is one you will not want to miss as new Callaway irons go Off Course.
Episode 171 is here and Dan and Zack discuss the following topics.
Comparing the Callaway Apex Pro Series
Tour Feedback and Adoption
Apex Pro Sole Re-Imagined
Combo Set Potential
The Callaway Apex UT and UW
And so much more

Not done listening yet, but for the people that this Pro Series doesn’t really fit into hope you really paid attention around the 35 min mark.
The sole talk was very interesting, love stuff like that.
Oh and the AI face for the Pro irons is crazy awesome, I can’t decide if I want a Pro 3 iron or the UT???? I’m leaning towards UT
At right around the 45:55 mark Zach talked about his TD driver and how he didn’t want to hit the new model because of how good the Paradym is right now for him. Can’t wait to learn about the new stuff!!!

Sounds like @Jeff Spicoli will be asking him a lot of questions since he currently feels the same!

oh totally was a player’s profile, I just hope they continue that progression into normal golfers 😉 profile

From what it sounded like Zach was saying is the Pros would blend into the next part that is to be released.

I listened to the stuff about the dynamic sole design a couple times, really interesting hearing why and how it was designed.
Im about to listen to fire this one up
Again on my drive to the course tomorrow morning.

was hoping Zack would offer why the PW and GW in the Pro didn’t get the 10 and 11 designation

He said the tour guys wanted numbers on them, the tour guys won’t be playing the Pros in that part of the bag so they left it stamped with the normal letters.

They obviously didn’t consult with @JB, who isn’t a Tour player and has long espoused his belief that a PW is a 10 iron.

Yeah, dude. Questions will be asked rapid-fire style. It’s ridiculous how good the TD.

I was thinking more about this last night and started pondering numbers considering the toe grind. Is there a specific swing speed that they were thinking about when designing that feature?
Nice listen, particularly about the Tour Staff giving their input on the irons and the forged face/1025 Carbon.
Apex 19 to 21 was exactly what I needed to enjoy the game of golf. I just got to a point where look is what I want now along with performance.
The only “Dislike” I had on the 21 was it didn’t have the cavity look of the P790,Forged Tec, i525 etc. but the performance was exceptional.
I was apprehensive about hitting a Pro iron and thought about waiting for the Apex24, which I’m sure is going to have a very nice clean look as well.
I was already set on gaming the T150/P770/New Apex in Spring. With this fall release it hit, once I saw the iron I was hooked. Lots of Titleist loyalists call it a “Knock off T100” but I don’t care, I love the screws, less offset, more compact, and the design.
3 different shaft combinations and found the one that clicked. For those “intimidated” by the Pro iron compared to the 21 it honestly isn’t that drastic. I wouldn’t upgrade if the ball flight and numbers didn’t make sense or just wait for Apex24.

Missed this the first time around, but tuning in now for some more insights into the Apex lineup.
I know it’s been asked, but love the reasoning behind why a Player driven lineup: No constraints to focus the best product design on the better player. No distractions from trying to also incorporate other designs for more categories of players.
Like hearing about the Progressive design in the Pro, and why they went with the same 455 Face cup design in the 3-5 as the Paradym, then the 6-AW having the Forged faceplate for feel, control and precision. I’m always a huge fan of Combo iron sets, and I know this is a Progressive set, but it’s really cool to hear about the tech design used to create 2 different expectations in the long irons versus the short irons.
Urethane Microspheres: They were made to bend to take full advantage of the thin face design. Helps sound and feel, but also the speed and forgiveness engineered into the face.
