Utility irons are all the rage right now, combining more of a classic look with modern technology compared to their hybrid counterparts. Cobra is releasing their KING Utility in two versions today, and like their FORGED TEC irons that hit the market this year, they nailed the looks.
Who uses a utility? Players looking for control and precision on longer shots including off the tee. A classic muscle shape delivers on the aesthetics, while the wide sole and hollow body provide the stability, but there is quite a bit of tech under the hood, so let’s take a look.
Low CG is often mentioned, but what’s it for? Having a center of gravity below the ball will help get the ball up in the air and when we are speaking of lofts starting in the teens, that is not a bad thing. Think penetrating flight that gets up, rather than quick rising and spinny.
Cobra continued with their PWRSHELL FACE here, which is designed to expanded the ideal impact area and get better ball speeds when you miss. And we do miss as the clubs get longer.
Adjustability is back in the KING Utility and we are thankful. Cobra MyFly8 Technology, which is a mouthful to say that there are eight adjustable loft settings. Great for fitting, but also to dial in trajectory and making sure you can nail your gaps.
COBRA CONNECT is still included, powered by Arccos Caddie, the Smart Grips have embedded sensors to track and record your round. Does it work? Check out the reviews by users on the THP Forum that continue to use it and post their thoughts.
The KING Utility is available in both variable (standard) and ONE Length options and if you ever want to have a blast at a golf store, grab the ONE Length KING Utility and take some swings. It is mind bending, that your 7 iron length club has adjustable lofts and is giving you tons of distance and forgiveness.
Before anybody asks, the shaft info is here. The standard and ONE Length versions gives you the option of the KBS $-Taper Lite in Stiff or Regular flexes and if you want graphite, the offering is the Project X Catalyst 80. The graphite option is available in the trio of R, S or X flex.

Such a great under talked about (like most everything Cobra) club
LIN-Q!
Yuppers! I’ve put up some fiiiiiiltthy numbers ei the this one in the past!
I really wished I could have found somewhere to test this club out before I put my Morgan Cup order in. I liked my old Callaway Utility but couldn’t pull the trigger on this vs the hybrid which I eventually changed out.
I’ll get you a sexy picture too
For anyone that followed this thread in the past, you know this was a hell of a club for me. I moved away out of lust, but coming back has been a ton of fun. It’s not the best feeling UT out there, it’s on the firm side, but it’s effective and hot.
I’m going to put a Rad hybo up against it to test total versatility for the bag before the Morgan Cup, but in Vegas on that track this could be a weapon on some of those par 4’s.
Not a layup when you hit a utility this far.
1iron utility coming soon?
Would be a fun club to put in the bag
It’s dead useful. And why I’m having a hard time taking mine out of the bag.
kbs $ taper 130, but trying a lighter graphite option too
VERY different beasts to say the least
Good to hear as the fairway and I have had a tempestuous summer. Hoping this may be more harmonious as I have another utility iron that used to be my comfortable fairway finder before it got displaced by the MC clubs
It’s firm, and fast.
And quite lovely this evening off the tee. The ball ball just jumps off the power shell face.
I was also pleased with it when I found myself behind a tree. Typically my punch is a five iron but gave it a go (I’m set at 18.5 deg) and it performed perfectly. Kept the ball off the ground but below the tree maybe 25 yds away with good carry and roll to around 200 total. Any punch that does that is a winner.
I love mine for punch shots! And agree about the face as well!
Today was a MIGHTY affirmation that it’s just really effing good for me. And add in this LINQ hybrid shaft? Sheeeeeesh!
But, it’s just excellent. For what I want, it’s always been the best performer for me when I go back and look at the data. Plus, the ability to dial it in helps there.
Tee and turf, it bridges a gap for me the best, so it’ll get the nod over a hybrid in that spot for the MC.
Any time I need a 210-215 shot. So into a lot of par 5’s.
But, I am playing the 4 at 22.5 and not the 2 or 3.
Yeah, that’s my Tec Hybrid or 5w gap, way easier off the turf.
I tried to tell people…a year ago.
That one was a beauty
We listened!
So straight up KBS $ Taper Lite?
Ok sweet… Did you adjust the loft at all?
I did WAY back in here somewhere. Posted about this one to myself for a long time
From address, this one looks eons better to me, but sole widths are about the same.
I don’t know why, but saying its bone stock made me chuckle
Bone stock shafttttttttttt
I can hear you saying it like this…
Accurate
I hope so, but I’d also be fine if this one stayed in line. It’s seriously fun.
I believe they were like 6 months apart, so I’ll be curious about if they stay with that timeline, even though it was the worst kept secret ever.
I’m glad to hear early indications are good
That’s a great to hear glad it’s working out. Like the rest of the Cobra line up they’re pretty underrated!
