Srixon Z-Star Irons

I think its dependant on the golfer. I like the shaft quite a bit and I know they work very well for JB.

Just got the irons I ordered from the demo day earlier this month, can't wait to get them out and try them on the course. Feedback to follow. I did not have any issues with the shafts on demo day...I hope that remains the same as I play these. Lot's of talk about the shaft not being what they expected?

It seems the stock shaft is hit or miss for most.

While browsing the web looking at Z-Star iron articles I came across this one. Look at the picture of the Z-Star irons, they have a black paint fill to the cavity. I wonder if this is just a euro-version thing? I personally like out silver version better but thought this is interesting.

I seem to remember them having the same pictures on the uk srixon site. Maybe it is a european offering but imo it looks nowhere near as clean and stylish as the all silver heads we're seeing.

Is there anybody willing to sent me out a demo club that I could hit? I do not mind paying for it. I can not find this club anywhere to hit and I really want to try it before I buy. I would return it or pay it forward. Help a fellow golf nut out please

get ahold of Patty or Dennis from Blind9, i know they have a demo Zstar driver they send out but not sure about a demo iron, my guess is they would have one to send if they have a demo driver to send.

That sound good. Thanks for the info

I hear ya man. I have really really wanted to try these out and I can't find em anywhere. I'm in San Antonio TX right now which is a huge city and they are nowhere.

I even called the Srixon rep and he told me to drive to Houston. WTH????????

Hawk, I agree took these puppies for a round yesterday and though I did not have the round of my life I did like the performance. I seem to think that these irons/shaft combo is more for a firm hitter of the ball. The other new one I took out for this round was the Z Star 3W...WOW! This thing is awesome. I'll post more thoughts later.

I think these irons with the Aerotechs might be heaven for me. Pondering!!

hahaha, poor chunky. I've seen him go through this before, it's usually not good.

I took the irons out today for a range session. I mustg say that the more I hit them the more I like them. They are very easy to hit and have a lot of forgiveness in them. I for one am happy with the stock shafts a nice penetrating flight that I need here in West Texas. I plan on putting them in play as much as I can this week to get a better feel for them in game play. We all know how range sessions can be.

Colt, thanks for the discussion around shafts. It got me motivated to change to the DGS300s. Definitely a better fit for me - I was occasionally hitting left or right with the Nippons, but now its just an occasional left and less left -i.e., if I was shooting at the center of the green, a miss would be on the left side of the green or just off versus 10-15 feet off.

I do like these Srixons but I ended up trading them back in (last chance to pull the trigger) for the Razr X tours with stock DGS300. I was fit to these a month ago (Z Stars were N/A) and was able to trade for no additional cost. Have played one round and am happier with them. Better dispersion and I like the "feel" better - seems like I hit the sweet spot way more often (maybe just lazy with the forgiveness of the Z Stars...).

Yeah, the forgivness made me a little lax in my swing as well after several rounds and I started going south. I'm back now though. It may sound silly but I try to imagine that hitting a butterknife thin set of blades every time I swing with these and it helped a lot. Really attacking the greens with these now! Two words to describe these irons. "Duhhh, winning"!

I like Srixon products and have been following this thread for with much interest. I was in the market for new clubs. I like the look of the players iron but I'm realistic enough to know that I'm not consistent enough to forgo forgiveness that much. I've been playing 2nd hand Ping i5's for 2/3 years which i get along with fine but they have a stock NS Pro 850 shaft and i just balloon the irons. The cost to replace the shafts has driven me to actually treating myself to a new set of irons.

I tried the JPX-800 pro and was impressed. I got good distance and accuracy but i kept coming back to this thread. I loved the look of those pics on page 1. I'm in Toronto and have no way of trying the Srixons out. So I had a dilemma. Use my head and get the clubs i tried and tested or gamble with the heart and buy something on looks and other peoples reviews? No brainer..... i scoured ebay and found a new set of Z stars 4-pw for a great price.

They arrived on Friday. Teh first thing i noticed were obviously the looks. These are beautiful irons. But i was very surprised with how thin the sole and top line are in comparison to the clubs alignment to the GI category. I was very pleased, as i mentioned earlier i love the look of players irons.

So....can i hit them? I had no time Friday or Saturday to hit the range but had a tee time for Sunday 7am. I replaced the Pings and hit the course. The first hole was a driver and wedge (vokey) so didnt get chance but on the second i had a good 7 iron in to the green over some trees. Oh goody.....except i left the 7 iron in the car!! idiot.
SO i choked down on the 6. Man, these clubs are pretty at address. I like the extra weight in the shaft and club that i didnt have in the pings. Anyway, creamed teh 6 iron over the trees (just..beautiful mid-high flight) and plopped on the green. I was sold.

The rest of the round followed suit. I would say that 70% of my iron shots were pure but the other 30% didnt lose any distance or accuracy and thats what i bought them for. The off center hits didn't hurt or sting but felt a little duller.

I had an opportunity on the last (par 5 2nd shot) to shape a draw around some trees in to a green about 200 yards away. I'm not the greatest shot shaper but i gave it a go and man it was so close. I got the draw but the wind was a little stronger than i measured and i was 10ft short but the shot looked awesome.

I feel my game can take the next step with these beauties. I not sorry at all with this purchase. I think i can work with the shafts (stock NS Pro 1050) as i was used to ballooning shots and these bring me down a bit. It would be interesting to try the KBS Stiff but thats for another day.

Thanks for hearing me out! Also thanks to the great reviews on here that hit the nail on the head with these irons.

Ok guys, I need your input. I bought my Z-Stars at a demo day where the Srixon van was there and they fit/built them on-site. The only, (and huge), problem was that they didn't have different shaft options available for the Z-Stars to demo/fit. I wanted these so bad that I git them anyway hoping that the Nippon would work and as the rep told me, "I think they good for you". I have been ballooning shots with the Nippons. I joked with a friend that I could hit a 6 iron, go back to my bag, clean the grooves, get a new club, and still have time to watch the ball land.

I went to a local shop today to talk to them about getting fit for new shafts. After explaining my situation to him he said, "You just spent $700 on a set of irons and you're considering spending abnother $200-$300?" He called the Cleveland/Srixon rep, exaplained my problem and they are going to give me a "do-over". They are going to have another custom fitting van here locally this weekend with all the different shaft options available and I can get them re-shafted. My question, how can I determine what shafts I need? Do I trust the same guy who "sold" me on the Nippons to be better this time? Could I take my set to a Golfsmith, tell them I'm shopping for shafts, use the Mizuno shaft optimizer on my Z-Stars and get the reccomendation from that? FYI, my 6 iron SS is ~88-90mph.

Any chance that they can let you hit a 6 or 7 iron with the different shaft options so you can see actual ball flight, etc? Given having everything done in person, I would hate relying purely on someone's thoughts or opinion when hitting them would not seem to be that tough to do.

I would head to a Mizuno shaft optimizer, get the numbers, then go with those three shafts to the van, hit those threem then pick.

Yeah, I think that's what I'll do.

Another question: is iron shaft fitting all dependent on the head being used? While no dealers around here have Z-Star demo's, could I go to a fitter, get the closest head possible, (weight, etc..), get fitted for that and expect the shaft chosen to react the same w/ the Z-Star head?

From my very limited experience with fittings, I do think the head weight can play a factor. This is SOLELY based on the fact that in my fitting today at golfTEC the fitter used a Mizuno MP-63 6 iron for my fitting as that was somewhat similar to a VR Pro Combo 6 iron (not a full cavity back, etc).

I looked at it as 2 part: loft/lie & shaft. The Mizuno shaft optimizer was only looking at swing speed in my case and the loft/lie for the VR Pro Combo iron was looking at swing path and impact of sole/face through shot when using the MP-63 6 iron.

Hope that makes sense and helps some!
