The Official Patrick Reed thread

I'm actually surprised it took that long for someone to yell cheater.

What I was most surprised by is how loud it was on the broadcast and Zinger was like I didn't hear anything.

haha maybe he doesn't hear things that he agrees with.

All three of the guys choked at various points last night. Reed had a staggering like 13 more 1-putts than anyone in the field and then he just couldn't close the deal last night after getting into the playoff.

It was refreshing to hear Azinger talk about the pressure and refer to the fact that some of those putts were $700,000 putts (the difference between first and T2).

Yeah like two Lamborghinis. o_O

Like the guy or not he has a heck of a golf game. Only reason he was even in this match was record putting. His putting was just unreal this week.

I don't condone people shouting negativity, but I fully expect it for the foreseeable future.

It's awfully hard to feel sorry for him too, as long as it's not happening while he's swinging.

Agree, he has brought this upon himself and can put it to bed with a little humility, acknowledge past faults and move on. Second chances are handed out like mints on the way out of your favorite restaurant, but he's too dense or full of himself so see the opportunity.

yup not a fan of people acting like that, let alone during a swing/putt

It looked like the fan yelled after Reed hit his putt so it didn't affect it.

Yes, it's going to continue to happen. Because of the fact that alcohol is sold at events. Because of the fact that this type of behavior is becoming "acceptable" at golf tournaments. And because the idiots who yell this and "mashed potatoes" etc. get attention. Last night's incident was mentioned immediately after on the live telecast - although Azinger is apparently deaf - and it was covered on golf central immediately after the telecast. Nothing entices idiots to act out more than getting attention for being an idiot.

He will only be immune from it at Augusta. You yell something like that at Augusta, you will be pointed out, escorted off the premises and banished for life from Augusta. As will anyone associated with your ticket. You would think he may get a reprieve at the Ryder Cup this year in Wisconsin, but not from the Euro fans.

He brought it upon himself but psychologically he actually thrives on being the outcast or the villian.

I agree, he has earned it, and it is not going away. That being said, man the guy is a gamer and extremely mentally tough. In his mind it is like it never happened.

For as much as I agree that inhibitors are reduced 8-10 bucks at a time at events, I really doubt people need them to vilify Reed verbally at events.

In any event, it's going to be an interesting year for P. Reed as far as heckling goes. I have a strong feeling that we will hear "Cheater" again directed at him. I just hope it's not during his swing.

TOC is about as limited and corporate as you will get in terms of the crowds. Wait when we get to Torrey, LA, and Phoenix, then we will truly start to see what the crowds think about PR...

My favorite restaurant doesn't have mints..... maybe neither does PReed's restaurant.... ;) Agreed... too dense

I think it's best to say nothing if you follow Patrick Reed. No clapping, no comments. The silence would be deafening.

Americans are in a precarious position though - he's (rightly or wrongly, depending on your view) been coined "Captain America" and has had some success representing his country.

I don't think as many Americans probably hate him as places outside of the States, if for no other reason(s) than that.

I'm almost 40 years old now, and been a life-long follower of sports as long as I can remember. One thing that always remains: time heals all wounds. Even dog abusers and legitimate cheaters, dopers, criminals, womanizers et al can/do rebound. If they can repair their images, surely he can too, in time.

I don't think Reed is interested in redemption or being accepted. He would be an interesting case study psychologically. There is a lot going on that drives and motivates him to be successful. And it may explain his estrangement from his family, his relationship with his peers and his continued foray into the realm of what can be termed cheating.

There is an article on Golf Digest with a caddy saying there is one guy on tour who is always doing things like putting his coin in front of the ball then replacing his ball in front of the coin, tamping down grass behind his ball, whacking weeds in tall rough, taking generous lines when dropping from a water hazard etc. He said by and large there is rarely any cheating on tour except for that guy. Wonder who he's talking about?

Definitely not a Patrick Reed fan, but every story needs a villain! And, like it or not, ultimately he's good for golf.

I mean the guy kinda gets what he deserves. He literally dug his own grave in the presidents cup by egging the crowd on by doing the shovel motions on the green after making a putt.

His interview at the conclusion of the playoff was less than inspiring.

Not a fan either but he's got game. He's legitimately #12 in the World and probably could be in the top 10 soon. It's just that what motivates him and how he acts really turns people off. He seems not to care who he pisses off or how anyone feels about what he does. But he probably inwardly does and he uses it all for motivation . The man is a marvelous golfer, but the golfer is not a marvelous man
