So much talk as of late about golf ball layers and what do they mean. How many is the right amount? Can you have too many or not enough? What does each layer do?
We sat down with golf ball expert Dean Snell, and had him answer all of these questions in this episode of Tech Talk. As always, Dean breaks it down in a way that anybody can understand all of the while giving some of the most detailed information out there on golf balls.
What golf ball do you play? How many layers does it have?

Interesting stuff. Makes me want to pick up a few different sleeves and compare. Maybe get the last tee time locally and play 5 or 6 balls.
Really fascinating stuff! Always acquire more knowledge from listening to a Dean Snell interview.
Down and dirty. Easy for anyone to understand. All Dean needed was a glass of beer on the table to make feel even more relaxed. Too many ball designs can get anyone confused. Love the sample pack concept to try and test balls.
I’ve never really understood different layers in balls until now. He made it really easy to understand.
Always love listening to Dean talk about the tech. His knowledge is out of this world. Now give him a few drinks & let him talk about his real passion … Hockey!
That’s a nice simple explanation. Another great spot with Dean.
He does have a way of explaining deep tech clearly. Conversation on the forum on this topic has really shown that to be the case as universally, THPers feel educated.
Love the Furyk tidbit! 🙂
I had no idea that each layer was designed like that. I always assumed they worked as a whole not as little pieces.
Dean is as good on video as he is in person. Great fact about Furyk and his (and other Tour player needs). I get similar results from a 4pc and a 5pc ball so now I know why!
