Two weeks ago, Mizuno unveiled the JPX 921 line of irons and if you missed our preview, check it out here. Over the last two weeks, we have been busy in the THP Tech Studio putting each of the four sets to the test.
The lineup consists of the Hot Metal, Hot Metal Pro, Forged and Tour. We wanted to not only tell you about the results, but show you the testing and talk you through some swings.
In the video below, we take each set for a test drive and talk a little bit about the tech, but go a step further and compare all four to each other in the wrap up with all of the data.
After watching the swings and hearing about the clubs, which set do you think fits best for your game?
The Details
In Stores: 9/17/2020
Cost: $1000-$1400 depending on set

Take this, and turn it up about 5 notches now.
I’ve almost fixed my shallow to steep problem and as I break that sh***y winter habit my flight was come WAY up and that SOUND is back, the one where you compress it and people turn and notice. Had one playing through yesterday on a par 5 with a 6i from 201 and dropped it 5 feet short of the flag, it actually drew an “oh ****” from the gentlemen Letting me through.
Distances are LONG for me, I didnt expect to play a 175 yard 8i in this set but here we are :ROFLMAO:
Want to get monitor time this weekend to see how I want to bend them, still thinking weak for a little easier peak and a little more spin.
Dude. 921 Forged with Recoil 110s bent a little weak? That is straight filthy talk!

These were fun to hit overall at my fitting. Bending them weak probably would have been a good option for me as well if I went with them.
Nice feedback man. Looking forward to more

On a snowed in whim of “oh wow I found a set of recoil 110 F5’s I forgot I’ve been stashing”, I installed them in the 5-P 921 Forged and just turned down the ferrules last night because im not a lunatic 😉
Taking them out today, abs pretty excited to have them back on the course.

Are these standard Recoil 110 or Proto? Customs by chance? I might need pictures

The HMP’s are right up there too. Had to weaken mine 1° to fix the gaps, but the extra distance is still nice. Couldn’t tell the difference in feel between the Forged and HMP, so went with the extra forgiveness (hopefully). Both are still just awesome irons though – probably the best ever from Mizuno.

I hit all four today (tour, forged, HM and HM Pro) and I struggled to tell the difference in feel between the forged and the HM/HM Pro as well. I am leaning towards saving some cash and going HM Pro. I am upgrading from Mizuno MX-200’s (forged) so hoping to get the benefit of over a decades worth of R & D. will need to be fitted for the right shafts and also want to try the Srixon ZX7’s and Wilson Staff CB’s as well before I commit. the JPX921’s feel very very nice.

The ZX7’s are TINY compared to the HM/HMP, keep that in mind. Totally different profiles in those and the W/S comparatively.
I’m going ti try and pop into a golf shop this weekend and the forged are basically at the top of my list. My bigger curiosity is what iron shaft I should actually be playing, but the reviews on the 921 line up are making them so enticing

Originally I had Dynalite Gold XP R300’s in them but I had a shaft fitting about 5 years ago and the fitter said I’d be better off with True Temper XP115 S300 – essentially the same shaft but in a stiffer flex as they don’t make the Dynalite’s anymore and the XP115’s effectively replaced them. So I reshafted them and tightened up my dispersion quite a bit. I have tried to kick them out of the bag a few times but keep going back to them. They have been a great iron for me – won’t ever sell them.

OK – thanks for that. I haven’t seen either in the flesh as yet. the more traditional lofts in the zx7 and CB appeal to me but these aren’t deal breakers.
I hit my irons well but I have always leaned towards GI irons (if you can get some help then why not) and I think that’s why I have liked my MX-200’s for so long as they are a GI iron but lean more towards the “players iron” spectrum than pure GI. and being forged they have been one of the few GI forgings that have taken my eye. they feel great.
the experience I had hitting the 921’s today left me feeling that they’d be a good choice
7 more business days before mine are shipped I was told today.:(
So….finally bent my 921F to my lie angle (1.5 up) and also took the set 1.5 weak of standard…and early indications on the GC2 are :love::love::love:
It’s course debut time! Excited to SEE the flight now and learn my distances again. Should get a nice little spin and peak bump while giving up a few carry yards. (y)
My rounds yesterday with my 921 HMP/Forged was a lot of fun. I hit 8 GIR (high for me) and what stood out was the forgiveness. mishits still ended up with decent distance and what I noticed is the ball jumps of these clubs. The feel/sounds is something I keep coming back to. I can’t say I have ever experienced what I am feeling/hearing at impact (in a good way). I played with friend who has played golf with me for years, and he commented that this was the best sounding club at impact. I just keep coming back to this is what people were talking about when they mentioned that “Mizuno” feel from their irons.
Also I am glad I went back to the Recoil 95’s. It launches where I want, easy to load and just overall delivers what I need. I’m looking forward to this season and playing some good golf with these irons.

It went silly well. I mean silly well. Ballstriking is ALMOST back, and the added height and spin in the loft change made all the difference in the world.

They’re a ton of fun. And for the first time in a while I’m actually enjoying a more forgiving iron than I usually play.
Had the 921 Forged out for the first time last night. They have the 950NEO Reg shaft. My 919HMs had the Recoil F3 shafts. The feel of the Forged is awesome. I’ve hit more centered faced with these than the HMs. I’d like to say I’m a better ball striker LOL but I’m gonna think it’s the shaft. I could be just overthinking it but IM IMPRESSED. Gonna take a little bit to get used to everything but not a lot

921 Forged
I was just fit into Mizuno 921 HM Pros with a Aeroflight i95. How long is it taking for people to get these custom orders?
I’m on week 4 for my 921F order. I was thinking maybe 5-6 weeks?
Curious to this as well, was fit for the forged. But don’t want to wait that long for irons
I’m in week 2 and was told 5. I went Forged and STx driver also.
I got fitted for my JPX 921 Forged on the 17th November. I received them on the 12th January. Initially I was told 20 – 30 days, that was a “slight” under estimate.
We should talk about this finish a bit..

Been out 3 times hitting shots with the Forged (950NEO Reg shaft) coming from the 919HM (Recoil F3). Here’s what I can say…
1) Feel is amazing 2) I have hit more center faced shots compared to the HM 3) Flight is higher but can control 4) Forgiveness is there but not as much as the HM, rightly so. But it’s very good
5) Smaller head but still gives confidence at address 6) Spin is good 7) Glad I went this route
I did grab HM when I got home tonight just to look down on it due to size and at that glance, it looked big LOL
I’ve got a full bag fitting at the end of the month, and I want to spend time with JPX 921. Apex Pro 21 are the frontrunner but I’m curious if these 921 Forged/Tour are sneaky good enough to make it interesting.
On the downside, I can’t see myself being willing to wait 8+ weeks for the product to get to me.

I am like 99.9% sure I am just going to order a stock set. I had two steel shafts recommended, negligible difference between the two (2nd choice is the stock shaft). Fit for 1/4″ short…… I did the fitting with standard length, I play standard length now…….
Curious if I can actually just grab a set off the shelves in store.
I just checked into my order with Mizuno. I placed the order Feb. 8 and they anticipate it shipping sometime the week of March 22. Cant wait to get my hands on them!
I’m picking up my 921 HM & HM Pros tomorrow. I’m a little nervous and excited about the X Stiff shafts I was fit into. Only time will tell.

So yesterday I drove the two hours over to pick-up my 921’s.
I was able to hit the Mizuno’s with their launch monitor to get some base numbers for length on each club. My first swing with the 7 iron had a carry of 168 and total of 178. I asked him is this for real?
“Yes it is he replied”. So I hit each club 5 times and wrote down the carry numbers and averaged them for a base for when I’m out on the course.
My trepidation on the X Stiff shafts disappeared quickly and was hitting some pretty solid shots. My other concern was the possible gaping problem from the 8 iron HM and the 9 iron HM pros. But it appears to gap rather well.
So on the drive back my thoughts on the extra distances had me thinking on how that might translate to the course. In the past, I always seem to hit it further on their launch monitor than I do in real Life. So when I got back to the Village I stopped at the Magellan Course and was pleasantly surprised to see we can now hit off the grass instead of Mats.
So I hit another 10 balls with each club. And determined I’m about 5 to ten yards longer on 5, 6, 7 & 8, not 15 to 20 yards off of grass. And I was just slightly longer with the Pros. As I was finishing up I noticed the first tee was open and a twosome was teeing off of # 2. So I asked if I could play nine and I was off. After the first hole I would use one ball to Drive with then on the second shots I would hit two balls to get some real course distances.
I drove the ball very well yesterday so most of the time I was in or just off the fairway. In those cases I would hit one off the fairway and one out of the rough. So I just kept score on the best ball as a lot of shots are blind to see on the raised greens. High-lite of the round came on the par 5 13th. I was in the left rough and had about 185 yards to carry over the pond. The hole was designed for a layup I think with a long semi circle around the pond. So I used my Apex Pro 5 hybrid and hit just short of the pin, hit the stick and ricocheted just off the green. Then hit the 6 iron and came up just short of the green but over the water. Then chipped in with the Gap wedge for Eagle.
While not an official score I ended with a potentcial 79 which I would always be with, considering the first time I played this course I shot an 120. Ten years ago. I’m happy I listened to my fitter and am happy with this purchase. I thought it might take awhile to adjust to the heavier and stiffer shafts. But as I played it was never in my thoughts, just what distance I can hit this club.
On a funny note as I was checking out with some balls and the hat. One of the staff asked ” Where did you get that”? “Over there and I got the last one.” 😎 He says ” I’m a Mizuno staffer and I don’t even have a hat. In fact I did’t even know we had them”. My gain.

Thank you. A couple of things I didn’t mention is the 9, PW, and GW in the pros are just fantastic feeling and in performance. And I found if I just make a smooth swing these go the distances that I want them to. And if need a little more distance that I should be able to get it from them.
They have a great feel to them.
For what’s its worth, I ordered the forged with the 120 stiff shaft on Feb. 5th.
Still mostly patiently waiting…..
