Back in August, we featured a new release from Cleveland Golf called the Launcher XL. As part of that line, the Launcher XL Halo Hy-Wood seemed to get a bit lost in the shuffle…Part hybrid, part fairway wood, where does it fit in the bag?
When we put it to the test in the THP Tech Studio however, it quickly became one of the favorites and something that could help a lot of golfers. Bridging the gap from woods to irons has never been easy. Be it through higher lofted fairway woods, hybrids, utility irons, etc.
This new breed is upon us, something that could offer the distance of those higher lofted fairway woods, in a package that might just be easier to hit. Rather than continue to extoll the benefits, we hopped into the hitting bay to tell you all about it.
We kick off the video below, with an overhead view discussing some of the technology that makes the Hy-Wood unique. From there, we take some swings in the hitting bay of the Tech Studio and show the data and of course finish it up with the table view breaking down what you just saw.
After watching the video above, is this a club that would fit into your bag? If so, where would it slot and what would it replace?
For more information on the Hy-Wood or any of the entire line of Cleveland Launcher XL, check out their website at www.clevelandgolf.com.
Might have just been the day, the turf, the mat, who knows?
At one point, I joked that @JDax should fill his bag with HyWoods. Great ball flight!
This club is not going to be easy to fit at a Club Champion type of fitter I think – UW might be in the same boat.
With a complete different shaft length as traditional Fairway or Hybrids – there wouldn’t be a correct length hanging on the wall to choose from.
I’m playing mine at 40 inches with no problem…
I like it so much that I’ve bought the Launcher XL Halo 3 wood. Being in Minnesota I haven’t had a chance to play it on the course yet but I have hit it a couple of times at the golf dome near my house and the Launcher XL Halo 3 wood is even easier and getting more height than the Super Hybrid. Can’t wait to try it on the course.
I’ve had the Hywood for 8 rounds. I checked at my Par 5 scoring stats on The Grint.
As a 14, my expected percentage of grints (par or better) is 32%.
My percentage the last 20 rounds is 35%.
My percentage the last 10 rounds is 43%
My percentage the last 5 rounds is 50%
I’ve played 12 different courses over the last 20 rounds. The hy-wood just gives me a totally different approach to par 5s.

Do you have any LM data you can share with this? I’m curious what you swing speed is, spin, peak height, carry and total. You swapped the shaft if I’m remembering correctly.
I’m going to be putting one into play next season. I can’t wait to experience first hand how wonderful the hy-wood is.
Ball go boom. All you need to know
I swapped the shaft too…
Unless you went with like super weak ladies flex in order to get the product in quicker, that stock shaft was just fine
What did you wind up with, and how much have you regretted doing it?
No. Stock shaft. @JDax changed the shaft. Driver SS is 100-105.
I went with a Matrix Altus Tour H8 hybrid shaft and it’s working great…
It’s like cheating how easy it is to hit
Im surprised you do not have one in the bag as of yet.
We’re going to get my son new irons but something tells me I’m leaving with one or two shiny new things as well…
Flash 5W is really hard to beat, honestly. Something about it and I work pretty well, so it clearly knows and is scared
but if I were manufacturing a hybrid-fairway wood "hyper hybrid," I wouldn’t put club numbers on it.
Fairway wood numbers might be offputting to those seeking a long iron replacement,
iron numbers might be offputting to those seeking a fairway wood replacement,
and any number at all might be offputting to somebody looking for something to use as a "safety" driver.
That being said, I’m not a club number fan anyway, but just a thought to add to the discussion.
That’s an interesting point. Especially because the number is pretty meaningless on it. The Hy-wood is a 3+. But from a distance perspective it really plays between a 5 wood and 3H. I think it should just have the loft on it.
Dude go get it. If it were me, hit this and say a 7w side by side. They should be close enough in loft to give you some idea, but the fairway wood is likely going to be longer. This is a really easy hybrid to hit. But also, that fairway wood slot though has a soft spot for me. I know I can hit a fairway wood in that loft higher than I can the Halo.
Do it. Grabbed mine in January after hitting it at PGA SS, just ropes all day long. Can’t wait for this snow to melt so I can get it out on the range.
I really enjoy mine and think it’s going to tough to kick it out of the bag.
It’s just so versatile.
could be a really good club for you.
It’s been a tough decision between the Hy-wood and the B21 5 wood. Same loft. Hy-wood head is actually 8 cc’s bigger. Since I play my Halo iron with Cypher graphite and that is what the Hy-wood has, I think it would be the better fit overall. Should gap better with my 4 iron. I will pick one up Friday.
Lock it down then man!
Best of luck with it. I play the Launcher XL 5W with the Cypher shaft. It’s a very good shaft. And even though I have the 5W, I am going to try the Hy-Wood this season.
I’m a huge fan of Cleveland Golf. I love how affordable their gear is and how it’s mostly made for people to enjoy the game with as much help as we can get. It’s such an underrated brand.
Looking forward to your thoughts
Honestly, it’s not even the longest 3 hybrid I’ve played. The Rogue X 18* (3 hybrid) was longer by quite a bit.
The Hy-wood is a really nice club, but it’s a strange one. You’re either going to like it or love it. It has a really big head, and is in between a 5 wood and 3 hybrid in length. To answer your question, I’d guess 7 wood?
If the size doesn’t bother you, you’ll probably love it. It’s very easy to launch high and straight, and it’s forgiving also. I just need something with more pop because FWs off the deck are my Achilles heel. I need as much as I can get from my lowest lofted hybrid.
I got mine from PGASS and I’ve given it every chance to impress me. I could keep it in the bag, but I’ll be giving up some yardage if I do. I’m going to use the 90 day playability and get a 18* Rogue St Max to go along with the 20* & 23* I just got. Hopefully it performs as well as the Rogue X did.
Your post is golf in a nutshell..lol. It always works like that haha
Soooo..I used it as a tee club twice and hit it off of the deck 3 times. I nutted every single shot. I’ve never hit a fairway wood this well off of the deck in my life.
My best swing was 220 yards into the wind gusting in the teens at 45F and ran it through the fairway on a dogleg right.
It’s a really easy club to swing. I can’t recommend it enough after my single cold round today
