Practically every golf ball manufacturer out there has an option or design with some type of visual alignment aid implemented into it. However, Bridgestone Golf had been a notable holdout, until now. Previously, the brand stood by the notion that they weren’t going to follow trends for the sake of it, but would entertain such an offering if there was one they believed to be both unique as well as a difference maker.
Apparently, it took Bridgestone staff member Jason Day and his mental coach to get there.
Bridgestone Golf MINDSET Visual Technology
With a name like “MINDSET”, it makes sense that a mental coach was involved with this one. However, it isn’t just any mental coach, it is Jason Day’s mental coach, Jason Goldsmith. The two worked in coordination with Bridgestone golf to create a “graphic pattern” which originates with the three-step mental game process which Day has been using for almost a decade.
“Jason Goldsmith and I worked together to develop a pre-shot technique that went beyond the simple visualization I did when I was a kid,” said Day. “He understood how critical pre-shot visualization was to my game but also knew I needed a more structured, complete routine. The MINDSET process we developed gives me everything I need to perform at my best on every shot.”
You, like me, are surely asking aloud at this point, “but what is it”? Well, that is a complex question. The process which the design is rooted in hinges around three steps: Identify, Visualize, and Focus. Those steps are each represented on the golf ball by three circles. The red outer level coincides with working to “Identify” the shape, trajectory, distance, and club choice of the given shot. Once those decisions are made, the yellow then prompts the golfer to “Visualize” the shot to its entirety within their head. Once there is a picture painted within the mind, the green inner dot should remind the player to “Focus” on execution. Green, of course, also means “go”.
Seem like a lot to follow? Well, Jason Day’s mental coach breaks it down as such:
“The MINDSET process allows anyone to do what all professional and high-level players do, which is to utilize a pre-shot routine that gives them the focus they need to perform at their best,” said Goldsmith. “When we started developing the pattern it consisted of concentric circles only, and there was no flow to the design. After some experimentation we came to the current pattern with three different colored circles with arrows, which provides a natural progression through the process. I’m very happy with the final product and believe it can be effectively used by players of all skill levels to improve their scores.”
The Details
Bridgestone always said that they wouldn’t do any type of “printed golf ball” unless it was unique, and it certainly feels like the Bridgestone Golf Mindset checks that box.
This new MINDSET pattern will be available 2/16/24 and be an option on all four of the 2024 Tour B golf ball models. They will not cost any more as the price per dozen will remain at $49.99.
Another round where I was all over the place today. Played a mix of regular and Mindset balls, sticking with the process is getting pretty automatic regardless of if I’m hitting the Mindset ball or not, and although I’m not really seeing any difference in my overall play/scoring, I think I do get over the really bad shots better than I used to. I lost a couple more Mindset balls, hopefully I’ll get drawn as one of the next hundred testers for a THP restock, but I was able to recover from losing balls and getting penalty strokes without compounding bad results with worse results. This was another round where I finished really strong, parring the par-5 16th and 18th, and although parring 16 isn’t that unusual, parring 18 is rare for me, so doing it two rounds in a row is definitely finishing stronger than normal.

I had a pretty rough round with the Mindset ball in play this past weekend. I struggled to get off the tee and went OB on a number of holes and burned through most of the remaining test balls I had with maybe 1 or 2 left. I think I’ve been getting a little too complacent with my mental game after some of the early success with Mindset and admittedly have become a little lazier with the three step process. Still absolutely think there’s positive coming from Mindset, but I think I just need to re-focus and make sure I’m being as diligent with the process as I was day 1 using the ball. The early success I saw doesn’t mean I’m out of the woods and am smooth sailing just yet. Should hopefully have my next round on Friday/weekend and can really focus back in on the three step process.

@mson I agree with you on becoming complacent at times. I’ve seen that creep in myself as the MindSet has become second nature. I believe that is why the logo is such an important reminder of what is needed to be successful.

Pace of play is starting to be a concern here :ROFLMAO: Going to check them out today. Not any high hopes as it’s only the second round this year and lessons in progress. Looking forward to it

You might be joking but it’s really not any longer pace of play for me. If anything I’m a bit faster as the process keeps me focused on the task at hand.
It’s not like I’m taking a 60 sec meditation every shot ?

One last question about visualization, especially for those that visualize their ball flight. Does your visualization influence the actual ball flight? For example, have you found if you visualize a fade or draw, you’re more likely to hit a fade or a draw?
This is difficult for me as I do not have the ability to hit a fade on command so I don’t visualize that. My vizualization is always a draw as that is my preferred shape, it’s really just chosing a good starting line and seeing it take the amount of draw i want. So I can’t say wethere it influences my actual ball flight as I’m usually only visualizing my normal draw ball flight.

Like @TWright971, I can execute a draw far better than I can a fade. I’ve tried, but for some reason I have a hard time with the fade.
I feel like the visualization increases the chance of me executing the desired shot shape, but not all the time. I generally understand the mechanics of what you need to do to execute a draw or fade, but I have a hard time – throughout the entire swing, I’m thinking about too many things (path, club face, stance, etc.). With the visualization piece, it almost feels like when I really visualize the shot shape well, it helps my body do what it needs to in order to execute that shot a little more naturally.
Could very well just be coincidence, but even if the visualization only helps me execute 1% better, I’ll take it.

I blew my last two over the weekend. Have some RX mindset now, not sure I’m sold on it vs the RXS for my game but I’ll add those thoughts to the ball thread as I get some conclusions for me.
One or the debates I find funny, is people who say saving a stroke or 2 per round isn’t worth changing their ball, but they will spend $600 on a driver to save a stroke or 2.
These golf balls and the MindSet philosophy have helped me enjoy the game more and score better A LOT better!

I’ve found that the MindSet graphic is a great visual reminder to follow the process and is a security blanket for me.
I’ve got a “imprint” of what the logo means and it is my visual cue to start the process instead of internally verbalizing it.
I suppose that a person could use any logo, but they would have to go through the same process of identifying parts of the logo with the process.

Probably different for everyone, but for me the graphic was a starting point, it got me started following the process. It then became a reminder to stick with the process, which was very helpful. Long-term I don’t think I’ll actually need it, as I’ve played plenty without it and have been able to stick with the process pretty well, but since the ball is so good I’ll probably stick with the Mindset version of the Tour B balls when I’m using a premium ball. I’m sure people could do just fine following the 3-step process without ever trying the Mindset balls, but they are a good tool to use getting into it, and maybe make it easier to ingrain the process into a normal routine.

So I got chosen to test out the Mindset Tech on the Bridgestone.
Help a “Skimmer” if you can.
How do you remind yourself to Identify, Visualize and Focus?
Could it be as easy as writing “TVF” on my Glove for Target, Visualize and Focus”?
I’m looking forward to trying these out. I know my dad has often mentioned that he seems to lose focus during the round. He’s a firearms instructor and talks about how he can focus when he’s shooting but often seems to lose that mindset on the course. I’m going to let him try these out too to see if this is something that can help him with that.
Excited to put these in play once they arrive! Very curious to see if they help my game at all
Really excited to jump in and be a tester for these. I work hard on my mindset (no pun intended) when I play, so curious to see how this may enhance that or make my process easier
I love that this thread is about to get 100 people stopping in with their thoughts. I used Mindset again today during my round. For me, the the process, is just a swing and a miss. I know others have chimed in and it’s a really good visual que for them, which is great. Would I still play the ball? Yes, because I think RX and RXS(what I tested) are good golf balls for me, and I don’t mind the graphic on there. With a strong likelyhood that I’d be the only one in my group playing it, I wouldn’t have to worry as much about marking it.

I get it that the 3-step Mindset process isn’t working for you, I think the main reason it works for me is that it is so close to my normal pre-shot routine anyway. I mean really, if someone has a pre-shot routine that works for them, and they are confident and comfortable with it, why change? For me the Mindset ball gives me a reminder to stick with all three steps of the process, and having the step-3 focal point is the main thing my normal routine was missing. Adding that in was a positive for me, and as I’ve mentioned before, I don’t see the need for the graphic long-term, since the Mindset process is becoming second nature for me. The Tour B RXS ball is so good though, when I use a premium ball I’ll be sticking with it, or maybe sometimes the RX. I’ll probably buy the Mindset version when I do buy them, might as well have the graphic on them.

and one thing that always becomes part of testing/reviewing. Just because the product doesn’t work for a person, doesn’t mean it’s a bad product.
I love that while not everyone has had the same experience with Mindset, so many have been willing to give it a legitimate look. As I’ve shared in this thread, prior, I feel very fortunate that this process has unlocked something in my golf game that I had previously been unable to find: a golf swing as free of technical thought as I’ve ever experienced. I can always respect that others have different experiences than I, but I’m excited for those that will be positively affected by Mindset!

? true facts here. That’s what’s so great about THP. People provide honest feedback about how the product performs. Just because it doesn’t work for them, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you.
I’m beyond excited about the 100 people coming in this thread to talk about their experiences. Probably one of the biggest (if not the biggest not sure) group testing.
@ddec the golf ball is a really good golf ball too and priced really well. It’s staying in my bag this year for sure because I’m committed to using it, but honestly given it’s performance and price point it’s hard to beat the Tour B line!
Looking forward to trying these out. I just reread the review article by @Jman and plan to get on the Bridgestone website to review the process more! Having a solid pre shot routine is something my coach wants From me so this will be a great test. It has been awhile since I have played any Bridgestone balls and the RX should fit my game well.
Final thoughts:
This testing experience has been great for me. I started this journey not wanting to use a Bridgestone golf ball and was skeptical yet very intrigued about MindSet. I had 4 dz of another brand of golf balls I had already bought. I’m using these for the rest of the season!
Once I was selected, I was all in. Last season was probably one of my worst golf seasons in years. I was defeated. I needed a change in MindSet.
I read and studied on what Bridgestone was discussing regarding visualization. Not only did it make sense, but many of the top level athletes use it.
The ball:
The Tour B X golf ball is a great golf ball at a really exceptional price point. I like the feel of the ball when it is struck. Off the tee performance has been superb. Great ball flight and reduced side spin. Approach shots still have nice peak height, descent angles and doesn’t roll out much. Around the green I get desirable spin. The ball performs well. It feels and sounds nice off the putter face to boot! Durability could be a little better, but typically I lose golf balls before they get scuffed and I didn’t loose as many so they lasted longer.

Proof is in the data:
Overall the MindSet golf ball performed better than anticipated. I shaved a minimum of 5 strokes off my score and range data showed that following MindSet lead to more consistent distances and tighter dispersion. Pace of play improved as well. Most importantly I left my rounds happier and with more golf balls in my bag.

Is it simple?:
Yes, it’s as simple as 1,2,3 but don’t let that fool you. The MindSet philosophy takes some practice, intentional use and some behind the scenes work to be successful. I found that looking at the ball at home and following the steps helped. Silly enough I tried it a time or 2 watching golf on TV just to get my mind into it.

Step 1. Red – Take data, choose club, commit to shot (internal verbalizing is okay) behind the ball
Step 2. Yellow – Visualize your shot (visual only no internal verbalizing) while behind the ball.
Step 3. Green – Look one last time at target and then focus on green dot and swing freely and confidently! (No swing thoughts or internal verbalizing)
Will it help?
It absolutely can, if you’re a person who can’t get in the zone before a shot, or who can’t get over something that’s already happened, or who doesn’t have any type of a pre-shot routine/consistent routine. It takes effort to do this, looking at the logo isn’t enough. Just when you think you’ve got it handled, golf happens. Will you be better every shot? Absolutely not. Will every round go your way? Nope! But, the reality is you will play faster, better and happier more often than not if and only if YOU change YOUR MindSet…..
Thank you Bridgestone and THP. This journey has changed my Mindset. I’m playing better golf and much happier while on the course no matter the outcome of a shot.

I’m sold on this ball. Finally got to play nine holes today. Shot 4 over. Only had 13 putts. Saw the line so well with the Mindset logo. It was raining a ton and I loved that it gave me something to focus out to try and forget about the rain.

Have you always used the line on a ball before this? Or just started with this one? I’m really curious what this could possibly do for someone who doesn’t use the line at all…would this even be worth checking out?
I’m going to be looking to find that out during testing, but curious your thoughts as well.
I have to go through this thread thoroughly now that I got selected for the big test. But early on and reading some of your comments, I’m really exited to try the method.
I’m someone who loses focus at times during a round and that usually ends with lost ahots and balls. Mindset appears easy enough to understand and execute that I can start incorporating it.
Love the explanations the early testers provided on how they visualize. Gives me ideas of what could work for me.

Now that testers have been selected, is everyone planning to use the “Mindset Alignment” on tee shots and putting? I realize that probably sounds like a dumb question, because I think that’s the concept, but I also understand everyone is different and may not like the visual aid it provides and maybe only plans to test one side of the equation?
And to further extend that question, if the course happen to be preferred lies on a wet day, or maybe it’s your league rule before fairways come in with full grass, will you use mindset on approach shots off the fairway?

I think I’m going to have the mindset facing me on the tee and putting when I’m standing behind it at least at first, I’ll try both ways. I think this could be a good way to reinforce the process throughout my preshot routine.
And I would definitely take advantage of it in a fairway if I could lift clean and place it!

I usually don’t use a line putting or on my tee shot, I try to set it up where I don’t see any markings on my ball. With these, I’m going in with an open mind and try the mindset every chance I get, I really want to give it a go and see if it will help with losing focus during a round. It seems like a always have a great round going, close to breaking my personal best and I’ll have a hole or two where I lose focus and ruin a good round.
I’m excited to give these a chance.
While I found the Mindset technology helpful for my game, the B X ball I chose to test is not helpful for my game. So I passed those along to another THPer and grabbed some RX to put into play.
Mindset works if you work it. Don’t feel constrained to use it in the same way as the player for which it was developed. I found it worked best for me when using the steps to check my setup when addressing the ball. One constant is focus on the green dot and go.

I almost always line up my ball on tee shots, so I expect that will continue. I’m probably 50/50 on using an alignment line when putting, and I expect I will align all my putts using the Mindset ball at first. Being first off weekday mornings when they typically water the course (and we have a worm castings issue), we pretty much play PCP. I may or may not try aligning those shots. I may want to see if I can carry over the Mindset process without using the graphic aid.

I prefer no line when putting so I may have the dot up but the arrow pointed sideways so I can still use the mindset method but not have the concern with wether the arrow is lined up or not. I will definitely use the alignment on putting. I’m sure I’ll also give it a shot on tee shots even as a swing reminder of sorts. I can generally only work the ball right to left, so not sure I will see a huge advantage from using it on the tee.

And to further extend that question, if the course happen to be preferred lies on a wet day, or maybe it’s your league rule before fairways come in with full grass, will you use mindset on approach shots off the fairway?

I’ll use it for putting, but not tee shots.
For putting, I’ve long used TT or if it’s not a TT ball, a long drawn line. It helps me align the put the way I want.
For tee shots I find visual alignment less useful and sometime even distracting. My desired path is a draw and I launch several degrees to the right of the target. It for some reason messes with my head, if I have a line towards the intended target.
For those who don’t plan to use it on your tee shot or putting, do you plan to focus on the green for on these shots?
I’ll definitely use the mindset aid off the tee and on the green during my testing. I’m one who likes to use the line/divide on a ball when putting 100% of the time, and on occasion on the tee. In this instance, with the mindset visual cue, I’d like to fully give-in to the anid off the tee and everywhere in between the green, as much as I can.
Can’t really express how excited I am to have been given this chance and am like a kid counting down the days to Christmas waiting for these to arrive!
I’ve never used alignment lines off the tee or for putting, and every time I’ve tried something like Triple Track I’ve found it more distracting than helpful. So with Mindset I’ve set the ball with the graphic rolled towards the back of the ball, the arrow pointing in the general direction of my intended line, but not used for alignment. This puts the green dot visible on the back of the ball, which is where I’ve always tried to focus on full shots anyway. Focusing on the green dot has helped me on tee shots, and when it isn’t visible from the fairway, or wherever else it might end up, I still try to focus on the back of the ball, but I found that I can’t use the “focus on the green dot” part of step-3 for putting.
Here’s a pic of how I have been setting up the graphic, both on the tee or the green:

I keep seeing a peacock’s eye when I look at that graphic.

For the tee, yes. I plan on aligning the ball in the way that I see the green. That’s the last thing I’ll look at before switching my sight a couple of inches before the ball, where I want the bottom of my swing arc to be and swinging away.

I can see that!

I have a specific line I’ve found to work best for me on the greens, so I’m not expecting to use the mindset arrow on the greens long term, but will try it for science.
Pretty sure I won’t use it for alignment on any swing shots either, but might plan to at least see it if that makes sense.
Played an executive course with my son using MindSet. Par 29. Small, firm and fast greens. Shot a 32 and had a chip in! The Tour B X shined today. I had a couple of full high lofted wedges that spun back 10 foot.
Take data.
Visualize it.
Do it!

Used RX Mindset ball for a couple sim rounds today. Having dabbled with it when it first released I find it very beneficial. In the sim I can get lazy and not stay 100% focused. In sim rounds today I had the mindset graphics on ball to remind me. I find that even when holding ball preparing for tee shot or waiting on others to tee off it would keep me focused. My buddy that was there today even commented on my ball striking today.
