Four years ago, Jailbreak revolutionized drivers, and two short years later A.I. did the same. Now, Callaway’s A.I. technology is actually revolutionizing the Jailbreak system, in a big way.
Today, Callaway is officially announcing their new Epic Speed metal woods lineup and looks to build on why is has been the #1 selling driver in golf as well as on worldwide Tour’s. There is much pressure that comes with the Epic name given the success of the past iterations, but as would be expected, Callaway believes they’ve taken yet another jump in performance and overall fitting potential.
For this article we will dive first into the drivers, and then the fairways. Are you ready?
Callaway Epic Speed Drivers
Being real, the Epic driver and Jailbreak is what cemented Callaway as being right at the top of the game, it was, and frankly remains, a cutting-edge design. There are a few companies out there who might have just ridden that wave as long as they could adding some slight tweaks here and there but not messing with the overall formula. Well, Callaway doesn’t do that, they only know one way, and that is forward at all times.
The inclusion of A.I., and we are talking true A.I. that is learning and evolving itself with each use, not just a simple computer program that companies have been using for years and now have slapped the A.I. name on for marketing, was another game changer with Epic Flash. The ability to use the face design in order to accomplish things that were only possible before with head shape and internals has unlocked another world of performance possibility.
With Epic Speed, Callaway turned the A.I. not just toward the face design, but also the Jailbreak design, and the result is what they are calling Jailbreak A.I. Speed Frame technology. By designing the Jailbreak simultaneously with the clubfaces they’ve found a more efficient design which you might have been seeing on the company’s various social media outlets featuring their players. The original design uncoupled CT and COR from each other, and this design now works with Flash Face to create and even higher overall COR at a set CT, translation? More speed through the more effective geometry as well as the way the now four connection points stiffen the body vertically and horizontally.
Speaking of Flash Face SS21, each driver does indeed have a unique face design to maximize performance aspects in relation to where golfers for each model typically strike the face. The other big aspect to the Epic Speed driver designs is the Advanced Composite Design. As the name indicates, Callaway has sought to utilize their Triaxial Carbon more effectively and with the Speed drivers the crown to body connection has been moved more toward the face which means more composite being used, and a savings of over 18 grams that could be repositioned. Additionally, they are using a “Toe Patch” on the sole which has enabled a more effective internal weight shift for the designs.
Now, to the options.
The Epic Speed will be the fastest driver head of the trio within the lineup. This one utilizes the Cyclone Aero Shape which originated for Callaway with the standard Mavrik model. Compared to the Epic Flash, this shape is considerably lower drag which in their testing has shown up to a 1.5 MPH increase in overall clubhead speed. This head also has the same forward CG as the Mavrik, but with a higher MOI through the weight savings from the amount of Triaxial Carbon in the design, the head will also have a mid-spin profile and moderate natural draw bias. While there is no sliding weight on the Speed model, it does still utilize Callaway’s adjustable adapter.
Next, the Epic Max is what Callaway considers their most forgiving Epic driver ever. It will also be the highest launching head of the lineup, but the improved aerodynamics compared to the Mavrik Max set it apart with speed potential as well as a higher overall MOI. The Epic Max is the most draw biased of the options but also features an adjustable adapter and a 17g sliding weight in order to fine tune for each player.
Finally, there is no Sub Zero this go around because the movement on Tour is currently away from a super low spinning driver with players actively seeking out a spin profile more in the mid 2,000 RPM range. So, the Epic Max LS has been born. This is the “better player” driver of the lineup, but it is a totally different configuration than Sub Zero possessing the aforementioned spin profile but also over 8,400 MOI, making it shockingly forgiving. The goal here is a super neutral driver which also has the most fade potential of the three heads. The Max LS also features an adjustable adapter and utilizes a 13g APW weight.
All three drivers will be available in 9°, 10.5°, and 12° versions with the Project X Cypher (40g, W/L), and Project X HZRDUS Smoke IM10 (50g, R/S and 60g, S) as standard options for the Epic Speed and Epic Max, with the Mitsubishi MMT (60g, S/X and 70g, S/X) for the Epic Max LS.
Callaway Epic Speed and Epic Max Fairways
It wouldn’t be a release without Callaway flexing their muscles with new fairway woods which aim to continue on the lineage they have established as some of the longest and most playable on the market. For the Epic Speed line there are two models, both focused on playability and firepower.
Both options also feature Flash Face SS21 utilizing a forged C300 maraging face and high strength Face Cup which is a big part of what makes their fairways so effective. As is expected, A.I. is here and each model and every single loft of each have a uniquely designed face which is optimal for how that club is typically utilized.
However, it is important to mention that the fairways don’t use the same Jailbreak which the drivers do. Because of the differences in size, profile, and design features like the Face Cup, a new design was necessary for the fairways. So, the Jailbreak A.I. Velocity Blades were born. This also increases the horizontal and vertical stiffness of the head for better energy retention and transfer, but it fits the needs of the fairway woods and even increases the torsional stiffness. A huge aspect to this design falls in Callaway aiming for these fairways to have the same CT as drivers, and the new Velocity Blades ensure the Face Cup can flex and help create that energy. The Mavrik fairways approached driver CT, but Callaway is claiming these reach it, and if that is the case, then hold on tight.
The Epic Speed Fairway has the more forward CG of the two options and according to Callaway is lower spinning when compared to the Mavrik. With that, there is a new leading edge which has helped optimize tee and turf performance as well as the previously discussed design elements placing this one into an area falling between what the Mavrik and Mavrik SZ fairways were, distance with launch and forgiveness. The shaft options for the Speed will be the new Project X Cypher (40g, W/L), Project X HZRDUS Smoke IM10 (60g, R/S and 70g, S), as well as the Mitsubishi MMT (70g, X – with 80g custom order) and will be available in 3+, 3W, 4W, 5W, 7W (13.5°, 15°, 16.5°, 18°, 21°).
On the other side, there is the Epic Max Fairway. This is the shallower faced of the two, but it also has the larger, somewhat oversized profile. After talking with their fitters about the Mavrik Max designs, Callaway realized that the sole weight to the draw side didn’t really influence things all that much, so it has now been replaced with a front and back weighting design which is reminiscent of the old 816 in terms of placement.
This is a 14g and 2g adjustable system which can be used to influence the spin and MOI possibilities. Additionally, the company believes that the better player who fits into the Epic Max LS driver can play either of these because of the ability to put that heavy weight forward and bring down the spin. The shaft options for the Epic Max will be the new Project X Cypher (40g, W/L) and Project X HZRDUS Smoke IM10 (60g, R/S and 70g, S). It will be available in 3+, 3W, 5W, HW, 7W, 9W, and 11W (13.5°, 15°, 18°, 20°, 21°. 23°, 25°).
The Details
Callaway’s new Epic lineup will begin hitting fitters everywhere on 2/4/21 and be on the shelf come 2/18/21. Prices for the Epic Speed, Epic Max, and Epic Max LS drivers will come in at $529.99 alongside the Epic Max and Epic Speed fairways at $299.99. Additionally, at the time of release, Callaway will be offering the new clubs through their Callaway Customs program which will undoubtedly make many golfers happy.
Are you excited or curious about the new Epic lineup from Callaway? Be sure to let us know what you think both below as well as on the THP community. Rest assured, we will have these in hand very soon with much more to come!
Got the Speed out on the course tonight. Was wet and soggy and the greens were closed so it wasn’t super representative of normal play but my god was it good to get outside! I had a hard pull going on tonight and my strikes were all over the face but this thing is outrageously forgiving. The ball just wants to go straight and while that didn’t work very well because of the pull, it’s the most fantastic thing to see and gives me a ton of confidence leading in to the real season. A range session or two should clean up the pull. I’m excited!

My custom Epic Max LS 10.5* showed up today!!

All black with red medallions.

Clean Crown option.

Mitsubishi MMT 70 gram stiff shaft. I did not request a swing weight but it came at my preferred D-4.

The Mavrik has been the best performing driver that I have ever owned. The Epic Max LS is not a lock to make the bag, it will have to earn its spot and the Mavrik has been phenomenal while the new driver has been on order.

The custom headcover looks pretty good but I like the Mavrik cover a bit more.

Looks good with the Apex Mixed Combo Set and the Super Hybrids which are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Added the extra weight myself. I like to play driver around 45” or less and like a healthy swing weight.
If anyone sees this, what are you older, slower swing speed guys using in this? Which head, Speed or Max (can’t imagine a LS would be the best fit for slower swing speeds), with which shaft is giving you best performance? By performance I am talking length/distance as dispersion is not an issue for me (74% FIR this year).

Tried LS and now trying Speed…….I’m hi 80s and the Speed seems a better fit……head weight is the same as my 17 gbb epic head(192g) but less spin ……playing Monday with it and will have more feedback……range time has it close to being bagged….

I am going to be so un-golf forum like here. I have hit a lot of drivers (many poorly) over the last three years, but for two days straight I have had crazy good result with the Epic Max and the (embarrassing) Recoil 450 shaft…and I like the green color scheme.
It is my friends and in two days I have hit probably 60 balls with it and 60 balls side by side with my Sim Max with Ventus blue shaft. The Epic is producing at least 15 yards more carry and the dispersion is not very close. It feels like I can hit it most everywhere on the Epic face and still be fairway bound. I am older and my driver SS averaged 99.8 on Trackman a month ago with the Sim. Maybe the Epic Max and Recoil shaft (I play Recoil 110 F4’s in my Srixon blades) is the ticket for old guys that are losing SS?
Anyway, I have one on the way. No way to argue with the results I have seen.
The one thing left to do will be to airbrush over the Recoil name…Tour AD DI 7X 🙂

I got to play 18 holes with my Buddies Epic Max today. As I said, I had two really good range sessions with it and I was excited to get it on the course. I put in a solid 38 on the front (slope 132), and backed it up with a 44. I think I hit one fairway on the back with it…just hit it horribly LOL. I guess you can’t hit it just anywhere on the face?? A real bubble burster 🙂 .
I second guessed my fitting for the Epic Max LS all week (swing was pretty bad as I had already done a fitting for Apex DCB irons). Since I hadn’t hit it yet, I went ahead and returned the one I bought after trying the demo in the store again and absolutely sucking with both that and the Epic Max. I may try to go back in and try again in a few weeks…there is being rusty and there is whatever in the world my swing is doing right now.
So, my TSi3 has competition. I sold so much golf equipment, I decided to make one last purchase for the year, a custom Max LS, with Smoke Blue shaft. It arrived while I was on my trip to Cabos. I have it out today on one of my regular courses. To me, it plays like a B21. Forgiveness all over the face. Believe me, I have tested it. But, it has a little fade bias. It is incredible. More after the round…

I went Max. It’s longer than EF for me
The real rock star out of the Epic wood releases may be the Epic Speed 3 wood. I hit it off the tee twice today. One drive went 276 yards and then I had this monster. I have never hit a 282 yard 3 wood on that particular hole.
Whether the Max LS or the TSi3 wins the long term spot in the bag is going to be a real show down. The Titleist has given me loads of confidence, but I am seeing more distance potential with the Max LS and it is a very forgiving head. Today, I hit driver 9 times. I hit 8 fairways and had 3 drives of 295 yards or longer, including the two below. I am in a love triangle. ?

Local store, don’t want to imply that they were to blame. I got carried away with the “I’m allowed to buy today so I should buy today” thoughts, and the guy helping me fitted me to what my swing was showing.
To be fair, they were great about it all. Let me hit a couple of heads yesterday and my swing was even worse than last weekend, so I returned for now, and plan to see if I can work a swing out and go back and try again.
45 holes in with the EM 10.5 degree and I have been very pleased. The sound is much more metallic (not sure that is the right adjective, but it is what I have) from the Mav Max. I can’t say it is a lot longer, or if it is more forgiving but I have hit a few BOMBS with it. Some if it is conditions here are improving and seeing a lot more run, but also seeing more wind.
3 hole stretch at my home course really illustrated why I play a max head. First hole was into a 20+ MPH wind and I hit one 237 into the lift side of the fairway missing several bunkers including one dead in the middle. This is fantastic for me in these conditions. Next hole was also into this wind and I left the face a little open but the ball still went 219 and stayed in the fairway.
3rd hole was the opposite direction with the wind at my back and went 288…. that is ridiculous for me. I had a 7I in to a 440 yard hole (and should have hit 8I) that I normally hit hybrid or fairway wood into and often that is knowing I can’t reach it.
2nd round with it I got a little bit hooky with it… after the round moved the slider to the toe side and proceeded to have my best driving round I can remember during my 2nd 18 of the day.
oh and the custom option no matter what colors you choose is much improved over the stock version to my eye. With the performance I would take the stock but love that they have the custom available.
Speed is AMAZING….extremely blustery conditions here in South Florida but man once I figured out what this driver wants to do……just STRAIGHT! Very little movement…….WOW!
For my swing ,the LS was too demanding…..also the feel, sound and flight are just perfect……
Looks like Callaway made a driver for every golfer with this lineup but for this old hack I’ve got a NEED FOR SPEED!

It is interesting how we perceive differences, many of which, of course, are due to how we deliver the club head to the ball. I feel like the Max LS is much easier to hit than the Speed.
As always great review, I will take a few swings with them and see what shakes.

Enjoy your new bat……Speed is at the top of my lineup…..
You see what I did there? (Baseball reference)
I played my first round with the Epic Max LS and it was a GREAT way to start. I was not able to hit a single shot with it before stepping up to the first tee. I was hoping to try the MMT shaft in this head but without being able to test it I decided to stick with the Tensei Pro orange. That shaft works very well for me in the standard Mavrik so I wanted the best chance of success on the maiden voyage. The standard Mavrik head was tucked away in my bag in case the LS was a dud.
I would love to say I hit a bomb on the first tee but that would be a stretch. I hit a huge banana slice that ended up on right side of the adjacent hole haha. It has been a while since I have seen that much left to right and I was thinking oh no, this thing is a slice monster. On the next hole I lined up center of the fairway and let another one fly not having any idea where it was going to go. That is when I knew things would be fine with the Max LS. I hit a mid/high launch ball that started right down the middle with just a touch of draw and it ended up on the left side of the fairway way down there.
I played the Mavrik Sub Zero for a few rounds last year and it was not a good fit for me at all. I was nervous ordering Epic Max LS although Callaway claimed it to be not as low spin and having more forgiveness. The Mav SZ was difficult for me to launch and the face was punishing compared to the Std. Mav. I hit a lot of less than perfect drives today and I feel like the misses were less penal than Std. Mav. My miss is a pull hook and I only had one of those today which is very encouraging. Watching the ball flight I am certain this head is lower spin for me but I need to get on a launch monitor to get some numbers.
The sound is great with a nice high pitched crack like a whip. Callaway nailed the sound last year with the Mavrik and the Max LS is different but still good. The clean crown option is nice to look down on at address. It makes the head look like a players head although it is a forgiving Max style head.
All things considered it was a great first outing, I might even take the Mavrik head out of the bag pocket haha. Plenty of launch, great forgiveness and low spin bombs when its hit correctly, yep this one is going to be good!!
Unrequited love…
I get the notice today that the Speed will arrive tomorrow. But my client says I need to be in Florida tomorrow. Florida. And he wants to play golf, too. I guess the Ping gets more action. Meeting the Speed is like a prospective Match date that keeps postponing your meet and greet by endlessly texting…
Most of you won’t remember this but the Epic Speed is very reminiscent to probably my all-time favorite drivers: the 330cc R510 non-tp circa 2003
Obviously more technology and a larger head but man , is this very close to that feel and address position. This makes me very happy for a possible Renaissance
I want to add a small amount of weight to the Epic Max LS. I saw @DNice26 use the double slide method but I believe that will be too much. Has anybody seen a weight kit yet? I want to avoid hot melt and this thing is too pretty to put lead tape on haha.

The extra sliding weight I have is only 5g.

I wonder if the Max slider would be available as it is a bit heavier.

Is this available anywhere? Maltby claims the Epic Flash slider does not work.

I had a gaggle of Epic and Epic Flash slider weights around, and they all work on the Epic Max drivers. It‘s been perfect, as I had some 16g/17g weights, as well as some medium and lighter weights, that I have switched around whilst testing different shafts. They fit in place, they slide, all good to me. YMMV.
work is sucking the joy out of everything, and i’m staring at my custom epic max that hasn’t even seen green grass, let alone had a chance to punish a golf ball yet. i need to fix this, and soon.
Here is a 12g stock Epic Max weight in my Max LS with Speeder 661, and a 17g Epic weight in my Max with Rogue White 60 stiff. I’ve run the gamut in weight when throwing in some Tensei Blue 65, Evenflow Riptide assortment, etc. 8g-13g needed in Max LS, and 13g-17g needed in Max. All for D2-D3 SW.

Really want to try the Speed fairway wood. Loved the Mavrik and want to see if they have managed to improve on it. Also like the idea of getting a touch more loft in the 4W.
Second round today with the Max LS and I AM LOVING IT!!!! Hit 86% FIR today, which is the best I’ve hit in over 2 years! I was hitting some absolute bombs with it as well. My heal side miss isn’t nearly as bad as far as punishment compared to my Flash. I am hitting this driver farther than my Flash but that could be due to the shaft combo as well and the reduction in spin. So the biggest adjustment for me is the sound. I’m not complaining about it, but it is definitely different sounding than the Flash and on mishits, you can really hear more of a “ting” sound if that makes sense. Centered, this thing sounds like a mute metal sound. I’m not saying I dislike it but just different from what I gamed the last 2 years.
