Corona Virus/COVID19: Local Impact

I have my first case of someone I know having Covid 19. One of my friends brother who I also know just not as well just spent 11 days in a Tacoma hospital. He was on a respirator for 9 of those days and was very close to death. He is early 50's, a big healthy guy that was released yesterday.

The danger from this is very real but I still see people blowing it off like it's nothing to worry about. I admit at first I thought this was mostly hype but was still taking precautions. My opinion started to really change about a month ago and my wife and I are only leaving the house when we have to. Please everyone stay home, stay safe and let's get past this.
Glad to hear he recovered!

The Fake News keeps reporting America "leads the world by far!!" in cases.

Yet they have been kicked out of China, so that definitively is not accurate because they have no way of knowing how many cases are in China.

Mississippi begins sheltering in place tomorrow at 5 pm, to last until April 20th at 8 am. The biggest concern was about the increasing cases in nursing homes.

We will know the results of other tests soon, let’s hope this can be a game changer.

Welp.. Hoping I don't get COVID, because I couldn't take that combo. Heavily allergic to Erythromycin, and Azithromycin is derived from it.

We can only hope that he is right but it sounds like a promising trend. Unfortunately it is only a treatment option and not prevention.

There are other HIV anti-virals being tested as well. A treatment that dramatically lowers the death rate is a lot better than nothing.

This will and should be deleted, but the convo here has pushed my buttons a little.

My problem with the political discussion is the how the extremes dominate the discussion. It's ok to say that while certain aspects of this disease management and the initial messaging weren't accurate, there were some smart steps taken too (limiting travel to China and later Europe). It's perfectly fine to blame China for this situation because the global pandemia is 100% on them imho. And it's even more relevant in a golf forum, because this situation may be a catalyst for changes in the industry. The way every particular leader deals with it is one thing, but the reality is, having to deal with in the first place is all because of China.

But we shouldn't have moving targets either due to changes in leadership's messaging. Initially, a lot of the convo underestimated the effect this could or would have. This view in a lot (not all but definitely a lot) of cases was following a political one as well. And it was wrong. And it's ok to point out that it was wrong imho, while still maintaining the awful role China has had in this. And it's ok to understand this particular admin has been set on bringing a lot of the kind of work that's been outsourced to China by prior administrations home. And that is clearly a good step.

There isn't a global right or wrong, so I sincerely hope the extremes stop acting that way. We're all in this freaking thing together, and both parties have put practices in place both to minimize but some that hurt when something like this happens. So, let's stop the partisan commentary, freaking deal with it, and then take proper steps so something like this doesn't hit us again.

The potential side effects seems to be the downside. Also people started hoarding it once it was mentioned is a problem too. I'm sure there are limitations on availability since I know Ohio put restrictions in place to fill orders for it once people start to panic.

Long term, might cause heart issues? But I mean.. Define long term? What about oh I don't know, 2 weeks worth?

I'd probably deal with the heart issues long term than the being dead short...and long term.

Yes, and if we can get adequate testing and get through the worst of it perhaps people can start treatment much earlier before hospitalization is required so we can start to trend into more proactive treatment instead of reactive treatment. If we can get to that point I think we can start returning to normal life until a vaccine is available.

UPMC unveils potential COVID-19 vaccine

PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — Scientists with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have announced a potential vaccine against COVID-19.

Scientists say they’ve tested the vaccine in mice, and it produced antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2 at quantities they believe could be enough to neutralize the coronavirus.

Good sign but sadly it says they are applying for a clinical trial to begin in the next few months. That goes to prove we are really 12-18 months out from completely eradicating it. If we can get to a point for finding a good early treatment before symptoms get too far out we can manage this a whole lot better until then.

NPR

Malaysia's Ministry for Women, Family and Community Development issued a series of online posters on Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #WomenPreventCOVID19. It advised the nation's women to help with the country's partial lockdown by not nagging their husbands.

The ministry also advised women to refrain from being "sarcastic" if they asked for help with household chores. And it urged women working from home to dress up and wear makeup.

WTF?

I certainly hope it's not happening again, and the selling and slaughter of live cats and dogs is despicable to our Western sensibility. But selling the bats still, as suggested in the headline? Not according to WHO reading the whole article ...

The Daily Mail it takes the info from is a British tabloid and is known as an unreliable source of fact-checked stories. I've gone back to find and read that particular article before responding here. Forgetting the salacious headline in what I see is a small circulation (56, 000 hard copy) Washington Times publication, here's what it goes on to say in the WT article:

'A World Health Organization spokesman released a statement to The Times on the Daily Mail story:

“”The article documents the presence of cats and dogs sold in a live market. These are not considered wild animals and are therefore not covered by the new legislations passed recently in China forbidding trade and consumption of wild animals. The stall selling traditional medicine made with wild animal ingredients is advertising processed medicine products and is not selling live bats or other wild animals or their fresh meat. The video with the woman eating a bat dish is an old video that has been around for months if not years.

“This being said, hygienic conditions, waste management and proper handling of live animals appears not to be appropriate and would still require improvements. These elements are parts of the WHO recommendations on how to improve live markets and minimize the risk for unnecessary transmission of pathogens. WHO is increasing its engagements with Member States to support them in improving live and wet markets as well as open food markets in general.”

I’m having a lot of trouble with the the IMHE model for the Wuhan coronavirus that the White House is relying on to make policy decisions. It is using NY/NJ data and applying it to the rest of the U.S.

It predicted that over 121,000 Americans would be hospitalized yesterday over the coronavirus. The actual number is 31,142. The projection does take Social Distancing into account.

The projection data is found here:
https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections

The hospitalization data is found here:
https://covidtracking.com/data/

State by State the projection is way off. Look at TN as an example.

In Tennessee, the IMHE model predicted that 2,214 people in Tennessee would have been hospitalized by yesterday due to the Wuhan coronavirus. The actual number is 200.

I actually saw someone interviewed on CNN from the commission that was involved with that report that the WH is using state that their actual figure was 80,000 if every state enabled the sate at home measures this week. I wish I remember the context of the comment or could find it online to share.

Florida folks, your governor thinks it is still ok to convene in mass at church even though he finally put in the orders.

EDIT:

I've since learned they are technically expempt in Ohio as well too but as our governor stated a couple of days ago, "It is not a Christian thing to do, it is not in the Judaeo-Christian tradition to hurt people, and I'm sure no one intends to do that. But by bringing people together you are risking their health, your health and total strangers' health. This is just a huge mistake."

These people who insist on continuing to have large mass gatherings are very selfish. I am not a religious person by any means but I respect everyone's religious beliefs and choices but mega churches who do this and hide behind their religious freedoms are not making smart choices.
