Back in late 2016, Wilson released their Tour V6 irons and they have been the mainstay for their players on the PGA Tour since that time. While the company has come out with numerous options since then, their stable of players including Paddy Harrington and Kevin Streelman have opted to continue to use this set. Today, they are announcing the Wilson Staff Model CB irons, which is inspired by the Tour V6.
Nearly 4 years in golf equipment release time is an eternity. Wilson is hopeful that the Staff Model lineage becomes more defined with the extension of a cavity back player’s iron to match the muscle back that has been out for a couple of years and used by Gary Woodland. That brings us to the new Wilson Staff Model CB irons and the evolution of the Tour V6.
“Wilson continues to strive to the make the best, most respected irons in the world,” said Jon Pergande Manager of Golf Club Innovation. “The Staff Model CB Irons are aesthetically pleasing to the elite player and with the new Tri-Brace stabilizer providing a structural connection between the topline and the central impact mass we have stabilized the topline enhancing the energy transfer to the ball while also providing improved sound and feel .”
The club head is 8620 carbon steel and the face is backed by what Wilson calls Impact Mass Area. Sound familiar? It was featured in the Tour V6 as well. This provides muscle back like feel with the cavity back design to give you a little added forgiveness and consistency without the loss of impact feel that is cherished in an iron this size.
The Tour V6 featured 20 grams of tungsten split heel in and toe in the long irons and centered in the mid irons to lower the center of gravity. The Staff Model CB changes that up a bit. Moving all 20 grams of tungsten to the toe of the long and mid irons to enhance stability.
Mentioned above from Jon Pergande, the Staff Model CB has something that immediately catches the eye in the cavity. It is what they call Tri-Brace stabilizer and we have seen that in a few different irons as of late in various forms. Having a more structurally sound club head is a good thing in an iron this size. The connection from ideal impact location to the top line will definitely alter sound and feel in a positive way.
For the loft peepers traditionalists out there, you will be happy to note that Wilson has kept the lofts that you are seeking. One interesting point is that the set is 7 pieces, meaning 4-PW only, but a 2, 3 and GW are available in custom orders.
This is a pretty early look however, with the Wilson Staff Model CB irons not slated to hit stores until January 15th of 2021. When they do, you will be able to pick them up at Budget Golf and use the THP Coupon on the right hand side of the screen for 15% off your order.
The Details
In Stores: January 15th, 2021
Cost: $999 for 7 pieces
Shafts: True Temper Dynamic Gold
Grips: Golf Pride Tour Velvet
If they feel like the V6, then they’ll impress, but the look, it reminds me a lot of the Honma releases recently.
It’s an interesting release, and one that feels more like “we are due for this” than anything else necessarily. They do look quite nice though.
Sweet clubs.
This is an interesting spot.
Staff Model are listed at more, but are 8 clubs.
As of yesterday (havent checked their site), V6 is listed at the same price as these, but it is for 8 clubs.
They went with a 7 piece set here (which is a smart move).
Yeah, that’s very true and I missed that. I’m honestly still surprised so many offer 8-piece sets present day.
At least these look like a completed and finished product, now, will they actually market them?
I mean January 15th is a long way away, surprised there is no preorder period. I understand the 7 piece set with additional irons as custom orders.
I don’t understand the Tri-Brace Stabilizer, sounds like they built an iron that needed something techy but corrects a problem in the topline with energy transfers? Sounds more like highway congestion construction.
Looks are okay, price is solid. Stock shaft and grip pairing I’m a fan.
Also shocked to see a 2,3, and G available.
I like how they have such a large cavity. That is a very old school look.
This is the million dollar question.
The Tour V6 were so so so good. So good in fact, like the article states, most of their tour staff is still using them.
There are a lot of competing irons in this class that have just come out or are coming out so the messaging is going to have to be very strong.
Question:
The black dot on head In heel area in two pictures – is that a weighting thing like old Calloways or maybe a lighting artifact?
It is not a lighting artifact.
Great idea but makes WAY too much sense for WS to actually do it.
I know I don’t live in a major golf market. But, with that being said, we still have a pretty healthy golfing population. I don’t recall seeing a set of Wilson irons on the shelf for who knows how long. I only got to see the V6’s because I played with a guy that had them in the bag. I couldn’t believe how much better they looked in person and I loved the way they looked in pics I saw.
Wilson won’t sell any sets here just for the fact that they’re not available. I don’t know if that’s a matter of the shop seeking Wilson out to carry. Or, if Wilson isn’t pushing the issue. I know they had a rack of Triton drivers that didn’t sell until they were on closeout. And, a rack full of Cortex drivers that didn’t sell until the price dropped significantly. So, I know they have a Wilson account.
Whether it’s Wilson not pushing their irons or the shop not wanting to dedicate the shelf space to them, I don’t know. But, I imagine that other shops across the country are in a similar spot and Wilson’s potential customer base for, what appears to be, a beautiful set of irons is limited. It’s a shame too.
Thanks
With respect to their offerings, I think the V6 was the bright spot in a long list of items that didn’t turn too many eyes. Do they have enough legs to get people to hit these and commit rather than overlook?
I think it could be. If they’re sitting on the shelf next to sets that are $1200-$1600 the sub $1k price would draw some eyes to it. But, it’s hard to say. Does the name Wilson hold any weight anymore for a lot of golfers? When they see that do they think of the Triton and boxed sets?
I would think many have fond memories of the V6 quality… What kills me (mentally) is the ‘rough’ finish in the cavity.

That is the million dollar question. If you go into Super Store and see these next to Mizuno MP20 and they are $200 less than those Mizunos does it make you want to try them out? Or is there an assumption of lesser quality?
Sadly price brings quality into the fray (see putters), but it can be rebuked with solid marketing and good media relationships to relay that messaging and test products.
V6’s are STILL the bright spot for W/S, and I think it’s beyond just irons.
It’s moving the CG more to the middle of the club and away from the heel. It’s the same design aspect a lot of companies are utilizing right now.
That definitely could be the case. I hope so. If they’re in a similar spot to me though, they may have never saw the V6’s in person though. I think Wilson still has a mountain to climb ahead of them. I hope this line is a huge success for them. I really hope they carry them locally so I can give them a hit.
I didn’t catch the finish in the cavity at first glance. I think that same section was rough in the V6. I appreciate the fact that the cavity looks cleaner in this iteration. Looks classy.
It depends, right before V6 was out, you could use it on there.
Not sure if that will be the case with this one with the THP coupon. Have asked Budget.

If you end up with them in your bag I have a sweet Triton driver to round out the set. LMK.
I dig that blade length.
Haha, I didn’t mean to offend the multitude of Triton users out there
I am always intrigued to see why golfers go in the direction they do – Obviously you need something to get excited it.. Is it the product, the company, the presentation in advertisements… There has to be a little extra something, right?
