It will come as no surprise that on release day of Callaway’s new Apex Pro Series lineup, the irons will garner the foremost share of focus and attention, but for some of us, the inclusion of a brand new Apex UW could turn that on its ear. You see, if you have read along on THP at any given time over the past almost two years then you know, the Apex UW has achieved cult status and then some.

However, the club went much further than being praised by amateur golfers. It continues to be in the bag of many Callaway Tour players, and some not on staff too. The decision to follow it up with a new version is both welcomed and met with some trepidation, as this is a tough act to follow. However, isn’t that always the story for Callaway and the Apex lineup? They release absolute performance driven designs, get questioned on how they could possibly improve them, and then prove the doubters wrong.
Is the new Callaway Apex UW going to continue that trend? Let’s dive into what we know so far.
2024 Callaway Apex UW
When it was originally released, the Apex UW was a bit of a unicorn, it was driven by some then staff players merging all the good traits of hybrids and fairway woods into one bridge-like design. Well, it achieved that and then some by offering shocking speed at a controllable length in a head that remained versatile and extremely neutral biased. So, it should be no surprise that they aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel with the ’24 version.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if we would ever see a follow up to the UW. Sure, it has had Tour success and been in many winning bags, but it was at the time a bit of a niche club. Since then, there has been a movement on Tour away from hybrids, and that has opened the door for the multi-purpose UW to walk through.
This time, Callaway looked to staff phenoms Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm for a lot of feedback in order to create the newest Apex UW. That message was to try and make it even more multi-purpose than before. So, while externally the shape and size profile is very similar at address, there are some notable additions inside and out.

For the inside, we now see Jailbreak with Batwing tech make its way to the 2024 Callaway Apex UW along with the C300 A.I. Face Cup to make for more speed potential as well as retention on all strikes to keep the speed potential the first version, and then some. The CG remains very neutral for those who want nothing to do with draw bias in this type of club, here it remains neutral to fade which will make many happy. On the outside, there is a new application of Callaway’s Cutwave sole form Paradym which they claim will make the UW more versatile from all lies than the first version.

The Details
Where some golfers might come away wanting a bit will be when finding out that Callaway is not currently planning on expanding the loft options as the Apex UW ’24 will keep the same 17, 19, and 21 degree options (17/19 available in LH). The standard shaft will be Mitsubishi Chemical MMT in 70 or 80 paired with Golf Pride Z-Grip Firm. The price point is $299.99 with pre-sale on 8/18/23 and hitting retail on 9/8/23.

The UW might be the greatest club ever made. I can’t think of another club that I have hit so well for so long and has not even been threatened to lose its spot in the bag.
I’ve been playing the 19* and will likely purchase the 17* whenever that comes out to see if there is enough space between the two to play both. Even if it’s not that much different and I can get 10 more yards out of it compared to the 19*, I will likely put in the bag. As much as I love the Elyte Ti, the UW shape and design is more versatile for me and just freaking works.

Been struggling with my 19* lately with dispersion. Off the tee I’ve been good, but off the fairway is where I’m having my struggles. Hitting it solid, just having trouble hitting it at my target.

same my man. It sits there in my sim. I pick it up and hit one good ball, think it’s time, think it’s going in the bag. Then I hit 4 more shots and spray them all over the map right and left. Then I sit it back in the spare collection for another chance another day.
to add, contact and distance are always good, its just directionally challenged.
Scramble the other night in league and decided to pull the UW on a par 5 just to see what I could do. Hit a brilliant low bullet that went exactly where I wanted, and was a bit longer than I had expected. Similar to my hybrid, as the year has gone on I’ve gained more and more confidence in this club.

Similar situation last night after an errant tee shot on a par 5.
There was a window, and the yardage matched up. While I’ve played far more conservatively this year I figured why not.
240 out on the right side of the hole and wind blowing in. Figured the worst I’d do is top it into the fairway for a 3rd shot into the par 5. So pulled the UW out and took aim a little left of the hole, thinking the wind and my normal fade would pull it back into the fairway in front of the hole. Nope hit another missile that ended up a little long and left of the hole having cleared all of the trouble that was there. Couldn’t believe it and was absolutely flabbergasted that I was able to pull it off.
Gaining confidence in this from the fairway could be a dangerous thing for me as it just gives me a bit more of an option on those longer par 5’s where I’d usually lay up.
This club got the call a lot today on a course that we played at 6700 yards. 1 of 3 fairways (the two misses went through the fairway into the 1st cut) and then a few more times off the fairway on longer par 5’s. It just wants to go straight and long…I know there’s a new one out, but this one isn’t broke so I’m not trying to fix anything just yet.
The 21° UW with UST Mamiya LINQ Red 7f4 is back to being one of my favorite clubs ever. I hit one of my best shots ever on a par 5 today from 237 yards. I was in the left light rough up on a hill. The goal was to hit it straight to run it up the narrow front part of the green. I pulled it off and the 20mph wind helped me get it to about 20’ for eagle. We won’t talk about the poor putt that happened but that shot was pretty darn special.

I hit this 3 times today. I put three pretty bad swings on the ball with it, each wildly out on the toe. I was living on the toe with multiple clubs, but it was most prominent with the UW. Apart from being about 10-15 yards shorter than I expected on each shot, I was otherwise unpunished. It’s interesting to me, because I haven’t found the UW to be the most forgiving in the past, but for whatever reason today it wasn’t terrible. Not a bad showing as the rounds before a new GD bag dwindle. Perhaps a new UW will be in the cards after all.

Honestly. if one doesn’t end up in my GD bag, I have so many reward points that I’m sure I’ll end with one at some point next year no matter what.
Picked up a barely used 24 UW 19* last week to give it a go.
Played my first round with it Sunday. My swing was a raging dumpster fire so I used it mostly on punch outs out of the trees.
Today played 9 with a better swing. Used it three times. 2/3 were good shots including 235 from the fairway 2nd shot on a p5, hit it to 15’. Missed the eagle, tap in birdie.
I was looking for a 220-230 club so maybe this will do it. It just has the stock MMT in it for now. Not my favorite shaft, so we will see…
This club continues to be a savior for my game. I am not sure I have ever had as much confidence in this type of club to hit that 180-195 yardage in my bag. I played with @Slowmo today and he commented on how that club has served me well since I put it in play. Most of my rounds are with Doug and he has seen first hand, whether longer par 3’s or into longer par 4’s, this club delivers more often than not.
