Last month Cobra Golf dropped their latest hybrid and it was sort of a surprise release timing wise. The Cobra KING Tec Hybrid immediately looked high tech (no pun intended), but how would it perform?
Today we are in the THP Tech Studio for another episode of TESTED! Where you see the swings and get a full breakdown of the data on the new Cobra KING Tec Hybrid. The video below starts off with some technology talk, and we walk you through overhead what is going on with this new hybrid. Then we hop into the hitting bay for some swings and finally, we breakdown the information that the Foresight GCQuad presented and give you some final thoughts.
This episode is full of information and data. Can this hybrid unseat some of their previous offerings with rails? How does the face angle sit and is it prone to hooking? We cover all of it in this review of the Cobra KING Tec hybrid that is just now hitting stores.
After watching the THP TV video above, what are your initial thoughts on this piece of equipment?
For more information on this specific club or anything else from the complete lineup from Cobra Golf, check out their website at www.cobragolf.com.
There has been so much talk about the Radspeed drivers and FWs, but I feel that this is such an under appreciated club. Is by far the best hybrid I’ve hit, looks perfect and goes forever. I’m not really seeing the fade bias that most are talking about, but then again I did move the weight to the heel so that’s probably it. Off the tee, out of fairway bunkers, from rough and also bump and runs around the green. This club does everything, love it!

The heel shift definitely makes a difference. It might be the first hybrid I’ve worked with where I’ve seen such a legitimate change when moving the weights to be honest.
I’m with you in its such a good shape and look imo. But I much prefer this face shape in hybrids to the super squared off toe.
It’s a weapon!

I completely agree with you there my man, I’ve always hated the squared off toe and actively avoided that shape. This one is the perfect shape for me and I love hitting it. Have had to loft it up to its full so that it gaps anywhere near right though, goes a good 10-15 yards further than I was expecting it to!

It’s LONG. Not quite Super Hybrid long, but it’s closer than people realize!

I hear you. The 5h lofted up as far as it goes is the same carry distance as my old Speedzone 4h set at 21 degrees. Although, the last few rounds I’ve mainly used it for knocking it out from under trees but that’s a different story entirely
I’ve hit a groove with this that is just insane. The looks are perfect, and the performance is getting damn close to that for me too.
This thing is a beast! First shot was great and fell in love with it!
I actually think the more I hit this, the more it’s RIGHT on the Super Hybrids tail…

Most definitely, and a shockingly easy one so far for me.
I’m a big fan of hybrids and this may be the easiest one to hit. I like the Radspeeds but can’t give the extra for distance because they spin and turn slightly left (not to bad) The King Tec just goes.
Looking back at the usage realized I was hugging the right side a little more than I‘d like. I moved the weight in the heel and what was arguably a slice turned into a baby fade yesterday. The adaptability is great.

Had a swipey swing today but the heel move with the weight paid off. Had a swing that deserved the right rough but it held on just enough to find the fairway…

Totally. I’d hit the same club there. (y)
Plus the way I was hitting the driver today, odds are the driver would have ended up around here…the scallop on the snakebite wedges are great for tight lies but don’t think they can handle an asphalt lie ?

This and the C721 are the most under talked about hybrids on the planet right now. But this is the one that brings the most heat imo, and being so visually neutral to fade biased makes me a happy boy.
I’ve taken the weights back to neutral and it’s been really impressive. Add in the new LINQ hybrid shaft from UST and im eager to see what I can do with it in Vegas.

But the beauty with the weights and hosel is you can make it less fade biased if you need to (see example along the right side of the fairway above ?)

Yup, definitely something I’ve talked about and tinkered with, it’s effective, and simple. But, it still sets up a little open which won’t be for everyone.
As much as I believe the KING Tour irons are under talked about, this hybrid is even more so. This is an absolute CANNON.

It’s definitely person to person, I look at this one and feel comfortable that I won’t hook it, put the standard Rad hybrid in my hand and I’m thinking fore left

I would love to see somebody run a comparison with an equally lofted Super Hybrid on a launch monitor. I think the standard length is a bit longer on the Super Hybrid, but only by about a quarter inch. It would be fun to see numbers. I may have to make it happen.

@Canadan whats your loft? I have the 3hybrid. If they are similar Id love to test that out at MOG once I recover from the weekend

His is 16, I have an 18 here that’ll get back to forum testing after the MC so a pretty solid comparison range vs my Tec

Take away my fun ?
That’s alright, I’ve got more cobra testing to do this fall. Outside of two rounds with the Zipcores when the Snakebites were getting new shafts I haven’t put anything up against the new sticks side by side to dial mine in as much as possible. This fall, with slower courses, sounds like the perfect time for that comparison.
This hybrid is a genuine cannon, and is just about the perfect hybrid! Almost too long for me, had to change the lofts on my FW and loft up the King Tec just to get it to gap, goes half to a full club further than expected. Love this club!
I bought one of those and, honestly, I was not having much success with it, so I pulled it out of the bag. I started following this thread again and decided to put the light weight in the toe and move that weight into the center spot, creating more of a draw biased club. I didn’t try it sooner, because I was afraid it would become hooky.
To my surprise, the club came alive for me. Now I am hitting these very high launching shots that carry the exact distance that I needed for that spot in the bag. Although it is totally unexpected, I am thrilled.

Yeah, it’s scary long.
It had no trouble for the 225 yd par 3 on the course @jdtox picked for our warmup round today ?
This hybrid is a rocket launcher and it looks fantastic!
The looks of those club are great! It sets up great and to me seems to be a anti left hybrid in a easy to hit package
So, I did things with this, this weekend. It’s a keeper. ;)
Saw several good shots hit with these this weekend and this was a club people had to buy themselves. Really good hybrid with a ton of pop.
I may or may not have picked up the 2H to test out…. Will have an actual fitting this saturday so will see how that looks compared to my 3W and some other options on a launch monitor.

I have only taken one swing with it (range or course) and hit it fat and went about 185. My concern with this is lack of speed to get it airborne with that little loft and that short of a shaft. I am working on speed but I am not a highball hitter anyway. So will see what I can do before the fitting.

interested to hear your thoughts after the fitting!
Too early to tell, but I hit this a few times at the range and while this club could be a great wind option for me at a links style course, not sure I can replace 3w yet. Too low for me currently, but will keep working and see what the results of the fitting end up being.
Moved the heavy weights to back/heel and was able to hit the ball much better (think some swing adjustments did more, but the weights helped as well)….. so maybe this is something that might work.
Will see on Saturday.
My 2h King Tec is not the 3w replacement for me. I dropped the loft in the 3w down 1.5* and added 1.5* loft to the 2H. This configuration has worked out well for me. The crazy thing is when the summer was dry I didn’t need either of these clubs out the fairway because the Driver was a rocket launcher. When I played TPC Vegas last weekend the wind, cold, and soft fairways forced me to use longer clubs. These performed great and the 2H is so easy to hit. I am tempted to go get the 3H and play at standard and drop the 3w back down to STD but this odd setup seems to be working for me for now.

This is what made the club really come alive for me, moving the weights to the position you did. It is interesting, because my normal ball flight when I am swinging well is a draw, so it is a bit counterintuitive, but I am not going to argue with the results.
I did a head to head comparison with the Super Hybrid this evening on TrackMan. Both were 21 degree heads. Honestly, the ball speeds were right there, neck and neck. However, this head launched higher and gave me more spin. It was the definitive winner over the Super Hybrid. for me this evening. These are representative swings with the Cobra, to give an idea of launch, peak height and spin.

I’m excited to throw this down against the SH.
Had some very interesting discussion with Yags on this one and it’s origins, which now make TOTAL sense to me when I look down at it, and it explains a ton to me.

I wasn’t a fan of this based on looks at address but it WORKS. I watched multiple people last weekend stripe this thing off the tee.

I would add that somebody attempting to make this part of a bag should definitely play around with the weight settings. I have played with front and back driver weights a bunch, because the Cobra driver has been such a big part of my bag over the last couple of years. I was almost shocked at how much difference it made for me to put switch the lighter weight out into the toe with the two heavier weights in the heel and back center.
