Titleist TSR drivers and fairways have been on the market for several months and have received plenty of praise during that time. Similar to years past, there is a TSR2 driver that brings together speed and distance. TSR3 offers fine-tuning via the Speed Ring Face Technology, and TSR4 is a 430cc low-spin monster. To complete the family, there needs to be a product that can work for golfers with a little less speed in their game, and that is the new TSR1.
TSR1 is all about helping moderate-swing speed golfers achieve speed and distance through the help of lightweight designs. To create this line, Titleist R&D took a close look at each club in the TSR line and stripped off every gram of unnecessary weight to help make these the best-performing ultra-lightweight clubs on the market that still look and feel like a Titleist.
The term moderate swing speed gets tossed around often, sometimes without real numbers assigned. When Titleist says moderate swing speed, they target golfers whose driver swing speed is under 90 MPH, which according to industry research, is roughly a third of all golfers. If that sounds like you, then the TSR1 lineup might be one to consider.
TSR1 Driver
Golfers in this demographic will look for drivers that can help them generate speed and still look good. Titleist believes that TSR1 fits that mold perfectly.
To help golfers achieve more swing speed, TSR1 is about 40 grams lighter than TSR2. Those savings come from a combination of head design, shaft weight, and even a more weight-efficient grip. Even with some weight savings, the advanced aerodynamic shaping and Multi-Plateau Variable Face Thickness technology are still a significant part of the TS1 story, similar to how they are throughout the rest of the TSR driver lineup.
“The TSR1 line represents a continued commitment to deliver speed to every style of player,” said Stephanie Luttrell, Titleist Director of Metalwood Development. “With the TSR1 driver, we found more speed and launch for the player through a lightweight design, better aerodynamics, and our deepest CG ever in a Titleist driver.”
Lofts: 9°, 10°, 12°
Price: $599
TSR1 Fairway Woods
The new TSR1 fairway woods represent the lightest and highest launching fairway woods in the TSR line. Compared to the TSR2, the head is more substantial at 180cc but comes in 20 grams lighter.
By choosing an open hosel design, Titleist pushed that center of gravity deeper within the head to help promote higher launch and more forgiveness. Compared to the TSi1 fairways, the TSR1 has boosted the MOI by an extra 15%.
“In designing TSR1 fairways, high launch was the top priority,” said Josh Talge, Vice President of Titleist Golf Club Marketing. “We wanted to make the highest launching and most forgiving fairway we could. The result makes for a seamless transition from TSR1 driver through the top end of the bag.”
Lofts: 15°, 18°, 20°, 23°
Price: $349
TSR1 Hybrids:
TSR1 hybrids carry more of a compact fairway wood look, making them larger than TSR2. With a deeper center of gravity and weaker stock lofts, these aim to offer confidence to the moderate swing speed golfer.
Hybrid shafts typically have a .370″ tip diameter, but TSR1 will utilize a .335″ tip which is more common in fairway woods, a change targeted to help increase launch. Meanwhile, to help eke out an extra bit of clubhead speed, these shafts are 1/2″ longer.
“Keeping with the increased demand for higher lofted fairways from players, TSR1 hybrids are the most ‘wood-like’ hybrids we have ever made,” said Talge. “With a larger profile and a slightly longer shaft, TSR1 hybrids promote the speed and launch golfers may want from a fairway but with the added gapping flexibility to fit into the rest of the bag.”
Lofts: 20°, 23°, 26° 29°
Price: $299
Stock shafts throughout the TSR1 line are, as you’d expect, lightweight. For the driver and fairways, the MCA MMT SpeedMesh shaft is less than 40 grams in every available flex. The same MCA MMT SpeedMesh shaft comes in at 50 grams as the stock option for the TSR1 hybrids.
TSR1 will be available for fittings starting on February 2, 2023 and will be in stores on February 23, 2023.
Love that Titleist has a line for every type of player. I could see a 20 degree hybrid being a great club. A little easier to elevate than a normal hybrid, but maybe a little easier to work with than a longer fairway wood.

what I like about their hybrid progression now is that they really have 3 distinctive shapes.
Like the clean look of the driver. In your top down pic looks pretty closed at address might just be me though. I do like the hybrid line has a ton of options. 20* might be nice instead of a typical 5* or UW if you prefer that head shape and it performs for you.
I really like that more OEMs are embracing the slower swinging player!
First look, this whole release looks really sleek and clean!
Sleek and clean looking…almost too much but I like what Titleist is doing here.
Good information @ddec ! Titleist TSR is a good looking lineup.
Looks like if you mesh this line with the new T400 irons, you’d have a GBB 2022 version competitor.
I really like the clean look of the tsr lineup.
Love this. Interesting that they target the swing speeds under 90, yet Nelly played the 1 series on tour. Goes to show how dynamic fitting can be.

absolutely. Someone who wants a driver head that will retain a little more spin and lightweight works for them would probably find a nice fit here.
@ddec do they give a reasoning for releasing this model much later than everything else? This seems to be the model that would fit the most people.

I can’t remember them mentioning one during our briefing. I wonder if they think something that is more geared towards this segment would get a little lost if they released all at once. Last time around IIRC they released 1 and 4 later than 2&3. This time 4 was included in the main launch.

Im not @ddec and his response probably has more background behind it, but I asked this a while back and was told that based on their fittings, TSR2 and TSR3 hit the majority of the curve.
Last time, 1 and 4 came at a later date and this time TSR4 was included since its a club that really jumps to being fit into. Personally I would like to see them release all at the same time. But I also understand delaying so you are back in the news during launch season.
Great information Dean. I am not quite down to the target demographic swing speed but am not far away. The clubheads look really nice at address, though the FWs and hybrids footprints are a little bigger than what I normally gravitate to.

Getting back in the news was in the back of my mind when I asked that question. Cool that all levels of golfers will have a driver somewhere.
I like the idea of very high launching fairways. I might have to demo one of these down the line. It seems like so many clubs that offer that also are heavily draw biased. Hope that is not the case.

we all knew what you meant anyway. don’t try to fool us.
I am right on the edge of the recommended SS for these and would be interested in trying it for sure. Need to jump on and see what shaft options will be there.
Love my TSR 3 and FW. Crazy launch and plenty of forgiveness. Titleist team was on point saying they were trying to build clubs for every kind of golfer.
I would like to try this line out. Driver costs are just going to keep going up.
40g lighter ?! wow. pretty intriguing release overall. It will be interesting to hear feedback in the coming months.
Interesting that the hybrids take wood shafts and are slightly longer in length. Probably good a option for those that want, but can’t get the tour only 23° Apex UW. I also wouldn’t put too much emphasis on the speed requirement. Zac Blair uses a TSi1 and is testing the TSR1 driver.
The hybrid has a great shape.with the right shaft combo I could totally see very good strong players putting one in the bag.
I have a friend that is a Titleist loyalist and ordered a TSR3 on release day. Unfortunately in all reality the TSR1 would probably be a better fit due to his SS but after dropping almost $1K it is tough pill to swallow to trade in.
This is where I have a bit of a hang up with Titleist and their delayed releases although I understand their rationale that this model covers a very low percentage of their customers. I can tell my friend just hold off, the TSR1 is coming but unless he sees it in print and has a definite date, he unfortunately just orders the wrong driver ??.
I am also right or just over the recommended swing speed. So many great new drivers. Guess I need ro go see a fitter.
Wait …. didn’t Nelly Korda play the TSR1 before she went to TM? Am I mistaken? Cause I know she swings faster than 90 mph.

And won with the TSR 1
Great write up @ddec. As I think about bringing a FW back into the fold I am really curious about these. A 3W in this line could really be an interesting option to try.

So by this logic, the explanation that Titleist has come up with is misleading. Why would she be fit into the #1 if it’s meant for swings slower than 90 mph?
These look really good – naturally being Titleist! Steph, Jacqueline and Josh were really excited about this release at Ballyhack, because they felt like it really completed the TSR line as having something for EVERY player and I agree. Interesting that they even played with things like tip diameter to help increase launch.
I really would love to see someone like my dad, who doesn’t even hit driver because he can’t control it or launch it, try this line (although he’d likely never spend this kind of lettuce). He currently plays a Callaway Big Bertha Mini 13* as his driver and hits it GREAT, but I think he has an irrational fear of driver and a design like this might unlock some extra yards off the tee for him. He hits 7i about 130yds so I expect he’s right in that 85-90 mph driver speed range.
He did order at TSR3 on release date but his SS is <90 mph and just saying if the TSR1 had been available he might have had a better fit in it. Either way, he was going to order the newest Titleist, that is just the way he is.

It’s not misleading. It’s created with the intention of working best for those with swing speeds below 90 MPH. Does it mean it won’t work out for someone who swings 97MPH or Nelly who swings 100? Nope. It’s why fitting matters, and she has access to some of the best in the world in that respect. When she made the switch to the TSi1, the talk was about how she preferred the shape and has a tendency to miss heelside with her driver, which the TSi1 and its CG location helped bring her strike closer to the center and gave her better overall numbers and more consistency.

Great write up @ddec. I like how Titleist focuses on improving your swing speed with lightweight components and not trying to force the ball left.

I read on a forum a post saying that their Titlest rep here in the states said they would be coming in the spring but don’t hold me to that.
So I have a TSR1 3 wood head here. What shaft you all think I should find and throw in it? Something that stays with the lightweight range we’d get with stock, or something maybe that suits me a touch better?
I was fit into the TSR1 hybrid at my fitting and received it yesterday. The feel off the face was very solid with a pleasing sound. Much better outside than in the hitting bay. My first four swings produced a straight, high ball fight. All aimed at the 185 pin placement on the driving range. Then I pushed one, then pulled one, but the next 4 were within 10ft either side of the flag. I should be so lucky on the course:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Location on the face varied from center to towards the toe. So a lot of forgiveness there. Very happy with my purchase. At my fitting I wasn’t seeing those good of results but I had hit a lot of balls at that point, hitting irons. Anxious to get it out on the course.

“Where’s the new T400’s?”
He just chuckled and said “Soon”
Well TSR1 Driver incoming with Accent 40S shaft.
So Funny.
Told my guy who helps me with my fitting at PGATSS and gave me a look of Derision when I said that I wanted to fit the TSR1 and Mizuno STZ-230. I bought a sleeve of CSX 2023 for testing
Well Driver is Mizuno, Fw is TSR1 and Wedge is TSR1 tuned down to 9.25°:

Here is my latest swing with TSR1:

If swing speed is Carry divided by 2.3, that’s over 90, which is awesome for me.
Ball speed is 4-5 MPH faster than what I got from PXG.
