More than a handful of years ago, UST Mamiya came out with an iron shaft called Recoil and it took the golf industry by storm. A huge success, the Recoil lineup is now the #1 graphite iron shaft on the market with a myriad of options to choose from. This year, they are releasing a new lineup called Recoil DART.
To begin, DART stands for Dual Action Recoil Technology and it is coming after years of development and testing. Getting into the technical weeds for a bit, DART is designed to optimize hoop stiffness in the critical areas of the shaft. In the flex zone of the shaft, you will find an increase in hoop dynamics bringing maximum energy transfer and better feel. In the tip section, the hoop stiffness is increased to stabilize and offer more consistency.
Hopping out of the tech talk, you are probably asking what this all means? Better consistency, more feel throughout the swing and maximum energy transfer. In other words, create a better Recoil shaft.
With UST Mamiya Recoil DART, the company set out to eliminate inconsistent areas of the shaft and any deadness or clunky feel that some associate with other graphite lines. Starting out, the company is releasing Recoil DART in two different weight classes, the 65 and the 75 and the specs are below. This offers both mid and high launches in fairly light weight packages.
In extremely early testing, we have seen some solid stability in weight classes where that is not normally the case. More coming soon after some more thorough testing in the THP Tech Studio.
Based on early conversations, I think we are going to be hearing a lot more about the UST Mamiya Recoil DART line of shafts in the near future. Of course, if you want a chance to ask the company directly, check out our THP Experience called Shaft Up, where you can win a trip to Las Vegas to get fit and spend time with the company over multiple days of golf.
I’ve got the 75 Dart’s in my Apex DCB’s. Not once have I ever felt like they were too light. My first day out with them I was hitting my distances and they felt great. Previously I had Recoil SMACWRAP 86g shafts in my old irons and I didn’t think they could make them any better. I’ll never go back to graphite, but I’m continually impressed by UST’s recoil lineup. The Dart’s live up to their name. Looking forward to a non-windy day on the course so I can really see what they can do.

Great news here.
So far the 90s feel pretty darn good. They are a different feel than the 95 Protos I have played for the better part of the last 5 years, but really darn good. A little more load to them, without any sacrifice in playability. I haven’t thought of losing it or anything of the sort and are plenty firm.

Are you thinking between Recoil and Recoil Proto?

Not really. DART is a different animal to me, but it seems to play stiffer than it is. Which I find interesting. I noticed it when testing the lighter variants and now here as well.
I am quickly becoming pretty smitten with what I am seeing. Its hard for me to do a direct comparison to the Recoil Protos as they were in different heads. But I have gone slightly lighter, without any fear of stability.

And we know what shafts I’ll be playing next year!
The DART 90s I am testing paired with the Forged TEC irons are a delight. Not sure what else to say other than I was able to drop weight to 90 from the 95 Proto line and they feel just as stable through the transition and the ball flight is exactly what I am looking for.
I’m running into a dilemma – I want to pick up a set of Rogue ST OS Irons however only the DART 75 or the 780 SmacWrap are available on the Callaway site as Stiff Flex.
I need the weigh but not the flex. So I’d have to get either Soft Stepped twice for the Flex. (Think I’ve got that right – Checking with Danny @UST Mamiya)
Dart is a $15 per Club upgrade – SmacWrap is almost $50.
SmacWraps is what I have in Rogue X irons, so I’d like to keep things as the same as I can.
A Dart in an 85 F3 would be ideal to match the MMT’s
Even though I just dropped from the Recoil 110 to Recoil 95s, I’ll be looking for these as soon as they are available.

They felt fantastic when I hit them in Alabama. Solid feel. Definitely feel stouter than my Catalyst 80 that I have in my older king forged tec (in a good way).
I have a set of irons i really want to put Graphite into and pull the steel shafts. I want 105’s and wish the release for these was sooner

I have Darts in a new set of PING 425s. So far, so good! I have the 65 gram at F3. These replace PING Gs with Steelfibre 95 gram in F3. Needed to cut some weight at my advanced age as well as a softer feel as the Steelfibres are a bit stout!!!
Another couple of rounds at Victoria National and I am really enjoying what I am seeing out of the 90s. I was able to go lighter, and I actually think some golfers could go lighter flex as they play fairly stout.

How stout. I like the flex and load of the recoil smac wrap 780 f4 not a fan of the recoil 110 f4 soft stepped. I play the steel fiber currently i95s in reg flex. Are you thinking the dart 90s play stiff to flex similar to the reputation that steel fibers have. I’m in full shaft ponder.

I do honestly. Maybe not quite there, and they have a Recoil like feel compared to the SteelFiber, but definitely play stiff to flex for me in the heavier weights that I am testing.
I had Steel Fiber and found them to be good all around shaft, but also found them to be somewhat inconsistent. I really like the Recoil Dart expressly for the tout to remove the inconsistent of the golf shaft, more efficient energy transfer to the ball for increased velocity and greater distance. I have steel 105’s in my back up set right now, but they are steel. I have been playing them the last 3 weeks and they really want to be the front runners, but i was graphite in them for my hands and elbow.

For those curious about the heavier weights that I have been testing and Danny Le has talked about, stay tuned for next week.
We are going to do a forum testing with a few Albatross Club members to be some of the first out there to get to try them before they become available in 2023.

OMG! I love the 105-110 weight in a shaft, testing Recoils in that size would be awesome
been waiting for this since it was mentioned.
Played with a friend of mine today that has a new set of PXG Gen 4 P irons with the UST Mamiya Recoil shafts. He is coming from the Taylormade irons steel shaft. Hitting them great . Picked up a club length but different irons along with graphite shafts so not an exact comparison. I went from steel to the Recoil Darts in my Apex 21 and picked up a club length as well as hitting them better. These are good iron shafts. Excited to see what the future holds for graphite shafts in irons.

@JB, what shafts in your wedges? I assume graphite, Darts? Or wedge protos?
I’d even get over the red in the dart graphics given what I’ve heard on the darts ?
The recoil 95s opened my mind to the world of graphite for irons but what seems like a stiffer tip section in the Darts has me intrigued for sure. Can’t wait to hear more as the get in the hands of THPers
Today and during this weeks rounds these shafts in the Apex 21’s have felt and performed great. At least a club longer than steel, better dispersion and the feel is just so smooth. And they are stable and when I need a little extra they respond well.

18 today . Just love these shafts in my irons. They have absolutely helped my game . I have demoed some other graphite shafts in irons and these just work out really well for me. Confidence inspiring.
I posted in the tester thread too but I’ve received the UST Recoil DART 90s. Hopefully I’ll be able to get them built up soon and will start sharing feedback on them as soon as I can.
I can say for now that I love the look and smooth finish seal.
