Since the Mizuno ST-230 drivers hit the market earlier this year they have found a new level of success for the brand when it comes to metalwoods. Both the ST-Z and ST-X have found play on Tour’s across the globe as well as in the hands of amateurs. However, we here at THP noted upon the release of those two drivers that there was something missing, both offer power and forgiveness, but they also bring a fair amount of spin to the table, Mizuno was missing that low spin behemoth.
We all should have known that the answer to that was coming. The 2023 Mizuno ST-G is here, and it might just be the lowest spinning driver we see this cycle.
The 2023 Mizuno ST-G Driver
Whether or not Mizuno always waiting to bring the ST-G drivers to market after the rest of their driver releases is a good idea or not is something that one could absolutely a conversation starter. However, you have to give credit where it is due, it always allows the brand to showcase their “mainstream” driver release that is absolutely designed for the majority of golfers. The ST-G though? It is a different animal.
If you were able to give the previous ST-G a try, then you know it was absolutely one of the lowest spinning drivers out there, and though it was lethal in the right hands, there were things that Mizuno knew they could do better. That is where this newest iteration comes into play.
The ST-G is a 440cc driver head that has a very traditional and Tour preferred “pear” shaping to it while also showcasing a very deep face. This profile is aimed at maximizing the ability for the different tech features that Mizuno has implemented to offer real performance while also differentiating the ST-G in this specific segment of less than 460cc player driven drivers.
Visually, the ST-G looks like a Mizuno driver. Starting at address, the company’s two-tone crown visual is present, showcasing the Run Bird as an alignment aid on a solid black finish that fades towards the rear of the crown in order show off the carbon composite. A notable change here with the ST-G is that the crown now wraps around the toe onto the sole to make one solid piece as opposed to a separate toe patch. This brought a weight savings of about 16g in all, making the weight tracks on the sole not only possible, but more efficient too.
The FAST TRACK system is indeed back on the ST-G, although this time around things are back to a two track system, removing the middle back channel that was in the last version. This change had much to do with efficiency that is now possible with just two tracks thanks to maximizing the length of the heel and toe side channels creating even more options. Each head comes standard with two 7g weights, and there will be other weights available for fitting purposes. Also worth noting, the Mizuno track system does still allow the weights to be removed entirely, and for multiple weights to be placed on each track, so if you want to get wild with it, you definitely could.
Mizuno’s CORTECH is also implemented here on the ST-G, though at first glance you will notice the shaping is different than in the ST-X and ST-Z 230 heads. There is no blue here, this look is all business. The chamber remains integral to Mizuno being able to produce heads which their testing indicates stands toe to toe with any other out there in terms of ball speed. The through slot filled with TPU allows more flexion while the floating weight controls stability and energy efficiency. This means a bigger COR area, in fact, Mizuno’s testing shows it to be bigger than all the other low spin driver heads on the market.
Perhaps the biggest tech story in the ST-G, is in the face. Where the other 230 drivers use SAT-2041 Beta Ti for the faces, this head is implementing an all new material for Mizuno, Forged Beta Rich Ti-LFS. As you might expect, this material is lighter, faster, and stronger than any titanium Mizuno has ever used before, it has less density while offering more tensile strength, and that means speed. Their Tour testing actually showed an average increase in ball speed of 1.5 MPH compared to the SAT-2041.
The face also utilizes a CORTECH Multi-Thickness design which is all about maximizing ball speed retention and spin consistency across the surface. This is also a piece of the puzzle for Mizuno’s focus on Harmonic Impact. That is one of the major reasons golfers talk about the feel of Mizuno irons and revere it so much, so the implementation of that and understanding how frequencies effect our perception of feel in drivers has been key to getting this version of the ST-G to a place where the previous model fell short. According to Mizuno, the new ST-G gets the sound/feel right.
The Details
The ST-G driver will be available in 9.5 and 10.5 degree versions with the lower lofted head also having a LH option. Each also utilizes Mizuno’s Quick Switch adapter that gives a 4-degree range of adjustability and allowing each head to get down to 7.5 or 8.5 degrees respectively. The standard shaft options are the Project X HZRDUS Smoke Green RDX 60 (S/X) and Mitsubishi Chemical Kai’Li Blue 60 (R/S).
Release date for the ST-G driver is 10/5/23 with pre-sale beginning on 9/25/23. Price at retail for this release will come in at $599.95.

It is a very low spin head however and quite a bit open at address.
No doubt it’s fast as can be.

Mizuno’s adapter sleeve could help close it down a small bit if needed though right?

To some degree. I think most adapters allow for some closure. And movable weights can help some as well.
I think it’s a great addition to a line that has two solid drivers and really adds this type of head. Personally I just find it very low spin and low launching.

It does a bit, but still not a ton compared to the head design itself. I’ve got mine even cranked down 2* so it’s even more open so I could get the spin down where I prefer it in the 10.5 head. Both weights heel forward to try and help counter the fade, and it does some, but you still have to be ultra cognizant.
I definitely agree with calling it more of a Players driver. I desperately want to hit the 9.0 head.
I know I mentioned it earlier, that after Walker closed me out I grabbed the wrench and made an adjustment. I forgot until I was scrolling through my pictures that I took a pic of the two strikes on holes 17 and 18:

I’d really like to better understand what makes this club so low spin compared to the ST-Z. If the face is the same height (for one thing), it would seem to have similar characteristics – at least if set up similarly (or so my monkey brain would think).
Also anyone can compare this one to the previous gen? I liked mine but as nearly everyone said, it was just too low spin, and I need spin with my weak slow swing 😥

Depth on the driver head is only part of the story on spin profile.
Where weight is placed internally is a large part of it. More weight up front and you will have a lower spin club head.

Thank you. This helps. I recall the old G, I hit it well, and occasionally got surprising distance, but it was highly inconsistent. Oddly forward weights gave me best dispserion and most consistency. But distance suffered, and now, at my age – I need whatever I can get and control off the tee. After the knee replacement, I look forward to taking ‘fuller’ swings to see exactly where I am and maybe where I can get.
The G is very inviting. When I was swinging it well it had a solid ball flight and went straight. The first couple drives in singles were really good. Our caddie wanted to take a look at the new driver. I was hitting a little heel of center and he was impressed how straight things were with the mis strikes. Pretty forgiving overall and has a nice sound to it. Will tinker with the weights a little more and see what that provides. Currently have the top weight in the heel and the bottom weight at the face.

You piped a few really good ones with it!
I’m all the way committed to acquiring the lower lofted head this winter. There is SO much potential in this head for me.
I received the Mizuno ST-G driver last week at the Victory Cup. This one is definitely going to be a work in progress for me. As @JB would say, last week some of my tee shots were more left than Hillary and some righter than Reagan. I don’t believe this has anything to do with the driver as it does me just sucking off the tee right now.
All in all, the driver looks amazing. I just need a lot more reps with this and definitely a few lessons to work on my swing. I was also previously using a Callaway Big Bertha with an extra stiff shaft so this is quite the adjustment.
Lastly, I’m playing in a simulator league this winter so more data and reviews to come.

Keep grinding!!
I’m so sad that I haven’t had the opportunity to even hold a golf club since returning from VC. It’s either been raining, bitter cold, or like now out traveling for work. I’m very excited to get it to my home course where I won’t feel the need to guide it around the course like I did with Vic Nat.
It’s going to be fun to just let it go and see what kind of results I get. I was deathly afraid to do that at Victoria National and it cost me big time in distance and dispersion. I did move the weights back to the rear neutral setting so my dialing will start from here. I’m also thinking of tinkering with the loft sleeve some as well to close it down just a hair.
So I think I’ve realized why I had such a hard time with the STG at Victoria National. It felt foreign to me and I couldn’t ever feel comfortable and get a good swing on the ball and had no idea why.
When we ordered our drivers we were asked for the Head, Shaft, length, and grip we wanted. Here is where I made my big mistake. For whatever reason my idiot brain was thinking of specifying the length I want the shaft, not the total build length. You see where this is going, right?
So in my infinite wisdom, I thought I ordered a 44″ shaft that turned out to be a 44″ driver exactly like I ordered. Complete user error. I want to be completely clear this is strictly my fault.

Got out today for a quick 9 at a local course. Not a real difficult one, and one that’s pretty wide open but it solidified what I had seen the last two holes at Vic National- I will not be tinkering with the setup as JB mentioned. Top back, bottom slammed forward is going to be it for me. I hit 6/7 fairways, with a 10-15 mph wind swirling on the course. I haven’t connected this one to Arccos yet, so I don’t have distances to really talk through but I was slightly ahead of the normal area’s I’m in at this course.
Extremely early, but I’m trying to contemplate bag make up for ’24. Right now I also have the STZ in there, but…. if the STG continues to do what it’s doing in this configuration, I would be an absolute idiot to not hit this thing every single time the course calls for driver.
Driver and I are NOT getting along. It feels bad and I have zero confidence in it with this baby shaft installed. I’m going to be swapping it out asap. In the meantime I’ve gone back to my Tsi2 w/Tensei blue and I’ve finally found my driver swing again.
However, I am getting along incredibly well with STG 230 3w. It’s a freaking rocket launcher. In the video below you can see the very tight dispersion I’m getting with it. I was just driving around the course tonight hitting different shots and had some real beautiful shots with the 3w.

I want to spend some time with this head with a shaft I enjoy. The stock offering are not my jam.

Encourage you to give it a couple swings- early on it’s been great for me!
Just finished a round today and felt a little better with this driver. I shortened my back swing slightly and hit a nice draw during my back 9. It feels weird only going OB once after losing 23 balls in two days at Victoria National ?. In all seriousness, I feel good moving forward with this driver. Headed to the simulator on Tuesday to take a deeper dive into the data and maybe make my first adjustment to the settings if needed.
The STG 3 wood is so money. I had 250ish out on the par 5 12th hole. I was sitting pretty in the fairway so I decided to go with Threewood. Traditionally I do not hit Fairway Woods very well off the deck ever. I stepped up and proceeded to rope one on a beautiful piercing trajectory straight at the hole it bounced in front of the green and rolled up to leave a 25 foot eagle putt.
I’ve only made this green in two a handful of times over the past two years. I had good pace on the Eagle putt, but left it just about 2 foot above the hole.
I’m officially in love with this Threewood.
Driver can kick rocks. ? hopefully I’ll start getting along with it when I get a real size shaft.
Been working some things out since Victory Cup with the swing. Got this out to the range and it performs really pretty well. I was hitting it all over the face and didn’t have too many punishing misses. Most would definitely still be playable on the course. Just shows the forgiveness it has, even with the smaller size. We you get a hold of one though man, It feels good and goes far!
Stg 230 and I are still not getting along. I’m saving up so that I can get a new regular size shaft for it. so I’m holding out Hope that we will form a relationship.
Hopefully I can have it re-shafted by sometime in December. Until then it’s on the bench.

I am absolutely enamored with the ST-G right now. The weight movement I made post VC, may or may not have something to do with it, but it’s a point and shoot option for me in these late fall rounds.
I’ve got a vaca scheduled next week, then the season is likely over for me weather wise- however found a nice Sim place nearby that I’ll be joining for the winter months. Going to be fun to actually see some numbers from the STG and whether or not I’ll be able to keep a swing over the winter.

Oh that’s awesome I didn’t know that was a thing. The driver is currently built to 44’.
I want to again reiterate that Mizuno built it EXACTLY as I requested and it was fully an error on my part. I don’t have any experience ordering custom clubs and in my brain ordering a 44” shaft would make it standard length once the head was attached.
I’d be very happy to be a test subject for you as I really enjoy the shaft in my 3w and I want to love it in driver.
This driver has my interest, I’m still gaming ST190 after god knows how long! I picked up a Srixon ZX7 Mk2 and could get no where near the ST. Now it’s defo time for a new driver but hoping this performs better or it’ll be another year of the OG ST

Interesting. I’ll be honest I still don’t understand a lot about the weighting and what certain positions are supposed to do or what flaws they are supposed to help with.
For me, I still have both weights all the way back. I need to dig more into the adjustments and what they could do to help or alter what I’m currently seeing. Right now I have a decent little fade going that sometimes turns into a straight push right. I never see the left side of the golf course with this head. Maybe I should tinker around with the weights and see if a setting could help me close down the face (which has always been my ‘big miss’)

Setting it up like @MarMill is likely to help you close down the face by bringing that weight close to the heel. That said, from a few posts up it seemed you are launching low. Your current set-up with both pushed way back should help with launch.

Thanks for sharing this @That post. I have it pulled up now as I am definitely in full experimental mode with this driver. Yesterday I played a sim round with @SkiBumGolfer and it was an interesting one. I started off decent with a few fairways hit but was unhappy with the lack of spin and distance as I was barely reaching ~240yds. I continued with the neutral setting (weights in the middle of the rails) and then my miss of a duck hook left was starting to make its ugly appearance. I slammed the weights all the way back and was still seeing below normal numbers for spin and distance.
I started hitting the STG 3 wood off the tee and I was hitting the ball further than I was with the driver consistently ~240/250yds which I’ve never done in my life with a 3 wood. It was a crazy round but good data to add to the memory bank. I’m certainly not giving up on the driver, I’m just more motivated to schedule a lesson to work on my swing.
I think you’re gonna get there man. The 3 wood was looking really good, so I know the swing move is there somewhere on the driver. The question is whether it just needs to be transferred to driver, or if the driver itself needs further adjustment. Getting the mechanics locked down before making any big changes is definitely a good move.

I recently watched it and with all of the info in this thread, I’m going to get one and play around with it this winter. Neither of the stock shafts are to my liking but I’m sure I already have a shaft that will work well with this head. I love the adjustability of the head and the size/shape of the head. I don’t really care if the head is 4% smaller and a bit less forgiving if the spin and launch are to my liking. My Paradym TD is 450cc and plenty forgiving.
I was able to play Sunday. This thing really performed well. Solid ball flight and was in play all day. Only one really bad swing that went way right, but overall was solid. I think it may be a little shorter in distance than my LTDx but I just love the way it sits behind the ball. Again, I think it is fairly forgiving for its size.
Local SIM place was closed for two weeks opening back up on Monday. Plan on getting over there, joining up and seeing when I can get this on there and work on the swing and get more accustomed to this thing. Not swinging a club for what seems like an eternity is annoying AF but hopefully soon!!
I’m finally seeing some life with the driver. I took a lesson with a new instructor on Thursday and he made a simple tweak on my takeaway which has resulted in a much more consistent swing path. Consistency is what I’ve been chasing the most and I think I’m finally getting there. It certainly wasn’t the driver that was my issue, it was clearly my swing, so I’m really looking to forward to how this club plays out for me as I start to dial it in. I played a sim round yesterday and hit 8 FIR’s which for those of you that have played with me know that is a solid improvement. I’m really looking forward to what’s to come and I’ve never had the itch to golf more than I do now.
Second sim round since my lesson and I’m definitely feeling much more confident with this driver in my hand. My old misses are gone and other than the occasional fade/slice, I’m pretty happy with the result. Still a lot of room for improvement but I’m very happy with the ST-G.

Mentioned in the FW thread, but got a chance to get to Top Golf last weekend and took a few swings with my ST-G. Got a myriad of excuses, TG balls, winter swing blah blah- but what I saw there, backed up what I was seeing at the tail end of the Ohio golf season, long and little fade into the back net.
I went and joined the local athletic club that advertised a nice two sim setup, and have gone three times in an attempt to utilize them only to find each time broken. So cancelled that membership and now seeking another alternative as I’ve seen a few more open up in the area. So for now, it’s TG until I can find something else with options locally. Still can’t wait to get more time with this as it became point and shoot at the end of the year.
Even with release season upon us, I’ve found myself less inclined to get out and test the new stuff as this just flat out worked for me in the last few rounds I got to play in ’23.
Ohio and February usually don’t mix too well from a golf perspective, but the mild temps we’ve seen meant that a range near my office was open yesterday and I got a chance to take a few cuts at lunch with this and the rest of the bag.
Limited the swings with the woods yesterday as I didn’t have a whole lot of time, but took 5-10 with the STG and remember why I fell in love with it at the end of ’23. Hopefully mother nature continues to cooperate and this means Spring is near.

You hit it so well there towards the end of our time at Vic Nat. I can’t wait to hear all about how much of a beast it is for you in 2024!
Was able to see good results with the driver again this weekend. Really starting to be able to feel good with the swing. Had a couple toe balls that were still in the fairway with good distance. I am really still surprised with the forgiveness of the driver with the smaller head size. This thing can really go when you get a hold of one. The feel is great as well. I will take out the Cobra LTDx and this next time to compare.
Reshafting my 10.5 head with some lower launch shaft options this weekend to give it another whirl after staring at it in my golf/tool chest for a while. Still wish it was the 9 head as that fits me way better to give it a real run, but maybe I can come up with something to get it back out onto the course and see where it sits now next to the other new releases.
