“Driver DNA in a Hybrid”
That’s quite the bold claim, but then again, Callaway has never shied away from the bold. If anything, they run headlong into the fray seeking to be the bold.
Two years ago, they did that with the introduction of the Super Hybrid. In 2021, they’re bringing it back, and this time they are throwing everything at it.
2021 Callaway Epic Super Hybrid
The original Super Hybrid was the prime example of, in my opinion, Callaway when they are at their best. A fall release which isn’t attached to any major line and instead can be aimed at a specific segment of golfers, a niche if you will. For the Super Hybrid, it was for better players who wanted a fairway wood replacement with launch and power, but without the left bias that anything other than a utility iron typically carries. The release was a hit, even at the price it came in at, so naturally this time there will be more of everything, more tech, more accessibility, more playability, more distance, and yes, more money.
When I say Callaway is throwing everything at this one, I mean it. Literally every major technical design feature is in play here, in a hybrid. The body remains titanium which is what allows so much to be packed into this one, the material offers strength and stiffness at the lowest possible weight, a key with this kind of speed potential. The face is also titanium with all the A.I. design optimization which Callaway is leads the industry.
Of course, the Jailbreak A.I. Velocity blades are here as well, and with the new angled and widened position within the head it means there is even more allowance for the face to flex and produce massive ball speeds while still keeping the vertical stiffness intact to maximize energy transfer. Add in the Triaxial Carbon crown which puts even more weight savings in play and the most extreme tungsten weighting (up to 90g) Callaway has ever put into a hybrid, literally custom shaped for the head design, then you have the checklist that is unparalleled in the entire segment.
With all the tech, it’s easy to lose sight of some important aspects. First, according to Callaway this is a more robust offering than the first version. There is a higher MOI, more spin potential in the right places, and more overall playability while still holding true to the tenets of the original. Oh, and their internal testing has even shown it to go toe to toe with the rocket launching Epic Speed Fairways, which is crazy to think about.
It is nice that the message here remains, this is a multi-objective club. But to make it more so, they are expanding the loft options from 16° to 27°. Interestingly, Callaway has recognized the different needs within that loft range, so there are two different head and face shapes within the single line. First, the 16° and 18° appeal more as the fairway replacements and as such have more camber across the leading edge as well as a symmetrical looking crown that peaks in the center. On the other hand, the 21°, 24°, and 27° have a squarer toe accompanied by a crown that peaks towards the toe looking more iron like overall. It’s a savvy progression decision which both expands the playability while staying true to its roots.
Naturally, the Opti-Fit 3 adapter is being utilized here as the adjustable sole weight in order to really dial in the club to one’s specific needs. The stock pairing here will be the Aerotech Steelfiber FC Hyrbid shaft in 60g (Light), 70g (R, S), and 80g (X). For initial reference, the 16° plays 41.5” stock, and the 27° at 39”. Additionally, the 18°, 21°, and 24° are also available in LH.
Now, the heavy part of the conversation that will 100% be the conversation driver most focus on, for better or worse. The 2021 Epic Super Hybrid comes with a price tag of $399.99, and no, you did not read that incorrectly. So yes, that is one heck of a price tag, and I won’t sit here and try to get you to rationalize it, but what I will say is there is little doubt this is the most technologically advanced hybrid ever made. Is that worth it? Well, only you can answer that when you get out and hit them to see for yourself. Stay tuned to THP as we will have much more with the new Callaway Epic Super Hybrid to come.

Something unexpected may happening with this club.
I think I’m falling in love with it.
I only hit it three times today but it was perfect every time. Two were off the tee where both had beautiful little draws and both went about 240-245 yards right in the middle of the fairway. The first was perfectly struck and the second was toe side but both worked out perfectly.
The third shot was off the deck and it elevated so easily, again with a little baby draw, and ended up going probably 235 yards.
This has been so easy to hit so far and it’s becoming a go to for me. It’s been awhile since I’ve had confidence in this spot of the bag.

The reason I say it’s unexpected is I’m not normally that good with hybrids. This has been silly easy for me to use though. It’s pretty impressive.

It really is pretty darn neutral and yet elevates so well.
Just got back from family vacation and am already trying to think of ways to get this rocket launcher back in my hands ?. Not sure how much longer the range is open but will definitely be trying to get there this week in order to put some more time in with this. Next scheduled golf outing is mid-October and think this club will absolutely be a weapon for me as it’s more target oriented off the tee 😎
This thing could turn out to be a weapon off the tee for me. Started with the draw setting this weekend, but ended up missing to the left a bit so I set everything back to standard, which seems to work pretty well. Didn’t hit it off the deck at all this round.
Distance wise, this thing is pretty filthy. Out drove my playing partners on more than one hole with it. Even just ok strikes are getting out to where my Mav 3H normally gets. Not quite ready to say this is taking over my lone remaining FW spot yet, but I’m getting close.

I love seeing this man. It’s so similar to my experience so far. I think my next round I’m going to bump the loft down and see what I gain off the tee and how much of a trade off there is off the deck as far as ease of launch.
Hybrids have evolved so far from TM’s original copper-colored FireSole Rescues.
So may players swear by them, and I myself tried a set of Cleveland Halos a few years back.
In the end, though, I did best with a high loft fairway wood into greens and a utility driving iron into tight landing areas,
I haven’t been able to play for few days as I was out of town. We finally have some nice temps in the high 80’s so I’m going to try and get to the range some tonight and tomorrow to get some good work with this. The good strikes I’ve had with this just fly. I’ve had a two way miss though with snapping some and slicing some. Not sure if it’s the club or shaft I’m. It getting along with so far but I’m hoping to get that worked out.
I’ve had a few buddies hit a shot or two with it and they have all piped it in the first swing and been like “this thing feels awesome”.
And just like that the 10% chance of rain turns into a full blown down pour.:(
I haven’t been able to hit it again since my last session. I’m trying to get out tomorrow and get some good info.

Good to know. Usually if I am posting pictures it is from tapatalk because I am on my phone.
Came back to earth today and had a couple of poor tee shots today. Even though I wasn’t great with it, every shot was in play and i punched one about 235 from the deck.
Going to get some range time before my round tomorrow. Will be playing with THPers so the hybrid will make the rounds.
Had a great session with this today. I need to figure out how to get the data off my app and down load it but I was averaging 194 on the monitor with 30-40 balls. And the monitor is consistently 10% below my on course averages.
Looking forward to continued THPers thoughts on this one. The early hype seems to be working for a number of testers.
I’ve had quite the balancing act going on lately in the bag for a lot of reasons, that said, the 18.0 is going to create a significant conundrum for me going forward the rest of the year.
Im pretty sure it’s longer than a 5w for me, but the ability to flight it still stands out for me. I’ve not had the ability to get a full monitor session on it yet, but hopefully soon, I want to see the speed, because I’m pretty sure I’m hitting high 140’s to low 150’s ball speed.
I don’t love the look at address, it’s just a little bulbous for me…but…the firepower makes it look just fine
So far, the Superhybrid has been what I have been looking for. Played yesterday and hit it three times. Second shot on a par 5 to get me to a specific distance to the pin. Tee shot on a par 3 that was always between clubs for me (pin high in fringe). The unexpected one was a punch through a gap in trees to advance me up the fairway after putting my drive in the trees – ended up much better than I had any right to expect.
So far so good!

That’s one thing that’s fun about these testing opportunities, you can get such a wide variety feedback because that’s something I love about it. I’m generally more comfortable with a fairway wood vs hybrid and this gets me closer to that FW comfort zone appearance wise.
Last week was an absolute mad house at work but I’ll be getting back on the course this week and looking forward to getting more work in with this beast.
Looks like weather will permit a lunch time range session with this powerhouse ?
Out of the fairway and off of the tee, this thing has been a monster. I hit two tee shots in my last round that averaged around 245. So easy to elevate off the tee and tight lies. Out of the rough, as you’d expect, the spin is quite a bit lower, and I have had some knuckleballs that don’t carry what I’d like. The face is hot, so the ball still gets going a long way. For those par 5s where I am trying to advance the ball as far as I can, but the lie isn’t bad enough for a short iron, the Super Hybrid gets the job done. The head gets through the rough better than a 4-6 iron, where I’m guarding against the smother hook. As long as there isn’t a hazard to carry, the hybrid will move the ball down range with no issues. Just have to be ready for the knuckler.
Had my first bad run with the club yesterday during a live round. Love the way it looks at address. Felt really confident every time I hit it. And took it out a few times when it wasn’t necessarily the right club because I wanted to get as much feedback as I could.
Not sure when I’m playing a full round the shaft blends well with my bag. Going to experiment with it the next round with it. I was hitting a bunch of toppers yesterday which I hadn’t experienced at all in any of my range sessions off of a mat.
Only got to hit m2H once this weekend. I was in the midst of some swaying issues and I sprayed it right a bit. It sure was long though. Sheesh. On the range this thing was a monster and I didn’t have much trouble getting out there pretty far. This one also launches pretty easily for a 16? I agree with @Jman about it being a little large to look at, but if I can get the distance I’ve been seeing on good shots somewhat consistently, I’ll take it.

Yeah, the power and ease makes it really easy to get over the look for me hahaha
I can’t get over how much easier it is to hit than the last version. For me, it’s night and day.
I had a tournament this weekend but tried hitting a few each day on the range warming up. I’m not sure if it’s the bulky look of the head or the shaft but I can’t seem to get along with this. I’m hitting it pretty low with too many that are slicing. I correcting that and end up getting a snap hook. I’ve hit a few that are really nice, particularly off a tee where I can get a little more height but no where near the consistency that I was hoping for. I’ll keep trying it out and hopefully something will click. The few people that I have had hit this have all really liked it though. One once to get a range session and a round in with it. Can’t say I blame him after he crushed one about 290.
I got a last minute invitation to play in a scramble today and unfortunately only hit this twice but it performed both times. The first was off the tee and as usual I saw a beautiful little draw that left me just right of the fairway. It’s becoming a real weapon off the tee which is huge for my game.
The second was off the deck and it didn’t go quite as good. I hit it a little fat and had a pretty big distance loss, which was totally expected. It was totally my fault as I just put a terrible swing sadly.
The fun thing about this club is that I crave hitting it over and over again. I need to get out and play several holes with this off the tee to see how it stacks up over a large number of holes. We have a bout of rain coming this week so it probably won’t happen for a bit but I’m excited to give that a try.
I don’t know what to think after reading these reviews and I know I will not be able to hit one as our local shop will not be carrying any. Right now the original Super Hybrid (20* turned down to 19*) is in my bag. Like most here mentioned, it does not launch particularly well. For me though, even with the face opened, I can only hit draws with it. I use it like a driving iron and it can be incredibly valuable depending on the course I am playing. The higher launch of the new one sounds great but any more left tendency would make it unplayable for me.

I know that this club has been playing pretty neutral for me. Depending on the swing that day, It’s little draws or fades. I wouldn’t say it has a left bias, if any.

I’ve seen a draw with mine but I should probably have made a huge hold disclaimer at the beginning of my review that I draw/hook everything. I don’t see a big hard draw with this which tells me for a normal golfer without my hook tendency it’s probably going to play pretty neutral.
I still can’t find a place close to demo these. The previous revision wasn’t great for me but with everything I’ve read I’m excited to try them!!
I got my first round in with the Epic Super Hybrid.
Wow. Mega Wow.
I’ve got a round scheduled for tomorrow afternoon as well. I’m leaving the fairway wood at home.

I hit one off the tee on my 17th hole today.. It’s usually my safe play when the wind isn’t with me.
When it almost went through the fairway….. I started to reconsider everything I knew about everything I know hahaha
One of things I am wrapping my head around is the feedback being presented by the Super Hybrid so far. It feels way more dense than I was expecting with all that tech in there. I was really expecting more of a fairway or even driver experience, and that’s not what I am experiencing so far.
It’s kind of awesome.

It’s kind of crazy because I’ve grown to love fairway woods so much the last couple of years but I’ve had zero desire to put my 5 wood back in the bag. It’s been incredible for me.
This is a ponder I can’t get off my mind. Thinking the top end of the bag could go driver, epic super hybrid(2?,3?), Apex pro 4 hybrid and then on to 4 iron.

I had the previous SH and this one is completely different for me. I couldn’t launch the other version and it was a serious fade machine. The Epic SH is a launcher and super straight for me.
Wife turned me loose yesterday unexpectedly to hit some golf balls so I sprinted my way through 9 holes at my local track. Left the driver in the truck wanting to get as many swings as possible with this and it did not disappoint. I had zero warm up and hadn’t swung a club in several weeks so I was pretty worried but things turned out pretty good (with this club anyway :ROFLMAO:) Side note, still haven’t dropped this down to 15* for maximum distance.
Hole 1 – First swing of the day, a couple that had arrived before me let me play through so I have an audience. Step up and pipe one with a bit of draw on it that finds the left side of the fairway and Shotscope says 256
Hole 3 – My nemesis hole on this course (both par 5s here just kill me). Tee shot is very tight, with woods right and left. For maybe the second time this year I find the fairway with a not great strike. Fairly straight, but had ball teed up a bit too high as this wasn’t a pop up but was definitely not a square strike. In the fairway with a distance of 235. Not bad for a mishit. I’m left with 255 in, and decide this is a perfect opportunity to fire away off the deck in live action. Put the forgiveness to the test on this as my swing was quite poor, result was a push-fade, but not slice, that managed to stay in play and got 231 yards per Shotscope. For sh*ts and giggles I decided to hit another one and hit the perfect mid-flighted draw that wound up about 2 feet short of the green on the fringe and, based on playing with Shotscope, traveled about 250 yards. Of course that would be the result on the 2nd swing :ROFLMAO:
Hole 4 – This hole is really tough to hit the fairway, but is easy to find a fairway since hole 1 runs parallel on the left and hole 8 parallel on the right. A solid swing, another mid-flighted draw that winds up missing the fairway on 4 by 10 yards but is in the fairway on 1. 245 yards.
Hole 5 – Slightly uphill, fairway narrows with trees on the right as you get closer to the green. Same mid flight, touch of draw, 240 yards to dead center of the fairway.
Hole 6 – Another par 5 that kills me, just not off the tee haha. Another nice shot but this one is pushed too far to the right with a hint of draw on it so it’s in the rough but 235 yards.
Hole 7 – Bit of a broken record, but another mid-flight draw here that starts a touch too far to the right. This hole has a steep bank on the right so it lands on that bank and doesn’t really roll out but still nets me 235 yards.
Hole 8 – The piece de resistance really. At this point it’s really dark, but I’m determined to get all 9 in . The same couple that let me off on 1 comes down the bank off 4 and so I have an audience again. Step up and take my swing. I never see (too dark) but it felt like a push and I’m worried I won’t find it. I head up the right side of the fairway, which has mature pines to separate it from hole 4, really expecting to find it over on #4 or under one of those pines. Wind up finding it in the rough on #8, with Shotscope pegging it at 260 yards ?. I was not expecting that result based on the swing, but alas that’s what happened. Best part was hitting a solid wedge in and sinking the birdie putt

In conclusion, this club is just a great fit for me. The forgiveness, the length, the feel, everything just works for me. It’s not foolproof, I can still hit a bad shot with it, but the results I see even on poor swings are outstanding. It’s still early on so I might find something, but right now my 100% honest review is this is the closest thing to a perfect long-distance club that I’ve ever come across. Off the deck or off the tee it’s just easy to hit and hit far.

Yeah I’m dialing down to -1, but don’t think I’ll move to D. I believe that dialing down the loft will open the clubface ever so slightly. If that’s the case that would make this thing (theoretically) even straighter which I would be fine with.

I’m still in love with this club. Don’t miss a fairway wood one bit.
My 4 wood….

100% agree with that . I have a brand new (to me) driver and I’m willingly leaving it in the truck because I need to dial it in, whereas the Super Hybrid is just ready to rock.

One of things I am wrapping my head around is the feedback being presented by the Super Hybrid so far. It feels way more dense than I was expecting with all that tech in there. I was really expecting more of a fairway or even driver experience, and that’s not what I am experiencing so far.
It’s kind of awesome.

That was what one of my buddies said when he hit it the first time. He just looked at me and said “that feels so solid”. He crushed it about 290 on that one with a flight that looked like a nice draw off of a driver.

He’s a big dude who can crush the ball. He can get a little sideways though especially with the driver. This would be a big club for him if he can hit it that distance and keep it straight. I actually hit the best one I’ve hit with this right before him and was probably just shy of 280. I may or may not have got some help from a downslope though.
