How do you explain what THP is to your golfer friends? What about those who don't play golf?

Good people who are honest about their game and equipment. Not internet touring pro's that swear by anything Japanese.

AKA Real people willing to do whatever they can to help someone else out.

It is like golf porn. I try not to explain it unless I have to :)

You can't really.... Try telling somebody that you have a funny story about a guy that's your friend that you've never actually seen in person named "Cookie".... tell me how THAT TURNS OUT.

I told my wife, "It is an internet golf group. May I go to an outing with some guys I met on the internet and just talk and play golf." She looked at me like I was bonkers and was frankly weirded out. I'm just glad it didnt turn into a LAN party.

But after the weekend and showing her the videos that I got, "It is a group of guys that love the comraderie and being around each other. If you don't have a sense of humor about good natured ribbing and your golf game, do not apply." Experience the outing and you will truly see what THP is all about.

Exactly, 2shoes!! "Who are you playing with this weekend?"
"Well, a ton of my friends, most of whom I've never met in person."
Insert WTC-face here.

I wasn't at the outing, but ihave been keeping up with the posts from it and as you all were getting there and setting up, only thing I can say from everything I have seen and read since I been a part of this forum is "FAMILY"

THP is like family, atlwast to me it is. where else can you go for great golf advise and not get riudiculed about how bad you play ( well a few jokes in all good fun though), where you have peopel you havent met in person talk to you about issues you have on the course or even help you out with equip you are looking for ( ex: think it was JN who sent out a Driver head for no cost at all), I mean only family does things like that and well even if I haven't met any of you in person its liek I know half of you by your posts so I consider you all family

This makes me smile pmoa.

I have a different perspective obviously, but here is my take.
I tell them it is one of the largest online golf communities in the world.
It features thousands of people that enjoy the game of golf and talking about the game of golf.
Add to that a headlines area that is filled with news and reviews and you have a place that is worth checking each day.

I used to try and explain it and it is difficult for some to comprehend that a bunch of strangers can travel from all parts of the world to play and talk golf. There is nothing like this that I have ever seen. Since Outing #1 the quality and caliber if people I continue to meet is staggering. I feel like I have friends in every corner if the world who would do anything if asked. They relationships we continue to build here will last for years to come.

THP can't be explained...it has to be experienced.

TapAhoy!

I like this thread. I'll use some of these on my parents later. Usually our conversations go like this:

Them: You spend way too much time talking to creepy 40 year old men online.

Me: They're my friends. They're guys who actually like golf as much as I do, which is hard to do. So it's either them or I talk my golf interests, curiosities, etc at you guys all day, every day.

So I guess that's how I explain THP.

I always explain THP as an Internet based golf site. Responsible for putting out honest reviews from regular everyday golfer about everything golf.

I always get, 'so it's not a bunch of paid reviews' and I say 'of course not'

But then I go into detail about how it's a community of liked minded individuals that share a passion, golf. This combined with experiences I've had and they always say 'that's cool'

People always think it's a site for computer hacking, especially at church, people get offended that I'm on a hacking website haha! To Me THP is a wonderful community of golfers that are wanting to be a part of a place where people don't act like snobs for playing better than us hacks. It's also a place for people who live to golf and who's "religion" is golf!

I love it here on the dark side!

Rep added for great thread, as I was just thinking about this the other day...

Being from an area without many THP members (and without many people having Internet or a full set of teeth), describing THP to someone is next to impossible.
I just can't find all the words to encompass all the glory that is THP.
To me, THP is the best thing that's happened to my golf game ever. All I want to do is spread the good word of THP like a golf Jehovah.
Most people shrug it off or stop listening or say, "what's a forum?" Some say, sounds neat I'll check it out, and never do. oh well, their loss.
For instance, I've got about 5 or more friends that should be members and would love this place and just aren't for whatever reason....

If I was an outsider, and I told myself about THP...I'd probably pee myself.
Then, if I told myself about the Morgan Cup...heart attack.

But seriously, I tell people that THP is an online golf forum that is all things golf, as well as this sort of golf enterprise that travels to different tour events and even creates some of their own. I explain the Outing/Demo Day and Morgan Cup and then each different aspect of the forum. Like I said, if the person seems interested, I'll continue with more detail...

Right on! That's where it started for me when I found this site. I was reading through the news and front page and then, BAM, Outing.

I think it's a place where we can come and help each other make educated decisions. That's how I found it and that's why I stayed. It's also a great source for all things Golf. Want to talk about tournies and events? Have at it. Want to talk about belts/shoes/clothes? Have at it. But more importantly, it's also one of those places that houses some of my best friends on the planet. How is that possible? I don't know but it is. I love it. I enjoy being here and I enjoy watching relationships being forged. There's nothing else like it out there. Period.

I work in IT, live and breath gold and gadgets as hobbies. No one is surprised when I tell them about an online community I stumbled upon. I tell quite a few people about it, as I try to spread the word of the community in hopes it will help others as it has helped me.

I've tried to explain THP a few times like this: It is a community of golfers of all ages, sex and skill levels, from all walks of life from all over the world who share a common passion for golf and like to come together on line to share experiences, give and take advice, learn about the latest in golf and generally have a good time doing so.

Then, I get this look. If you've ever had a dog, you've had it sit there, turn its head to the side and look at you as if to say "What the crap are you talking about?" That's the look!

How do you explain THP?

It's like an addiction. A good one.

My short answer is usually: "An awesome online golf community"

My long answer usually entails all the amazing things that I've experience since being a member here. It's an amazing place and can't be found anywhere else.

I call it the best option for golf information on the internet.

If they ask for more information, the next thing I talk about is the awesome people that keep the forum active.. Speaking of which, I need to meet more of you in person. Every time I meet a THP member in the "RL" it's a great day.

I tried to explain it once to my Dad and he kind of understood it. He wanted to know how I got the Boccieri Heavy 3W for "free" so I explained the forum and testing that is done here on THP. The more I talked the glassier his eyes became so I eventually gave up....

Last year when I got in The Morgan Cup I spent quite a bit of time explaining THP to people at my club. I explain the forum, but also tell them about what makes it unique. Well the quality of the members makes it unique and everyone that spends time here knows that, but I think the testing of clubs by average Joes and Jills really makes it different than a lot of websites. I'll admit to not being a club junkie myself, and I don't always follow a lot of the testing, but man oh manoshevitz, if you want some opinions on golf clubs or equipment from golfers that play the game better, worse, or similar to you, where else can you find info like you can find here?

The answer to that is nowhere. Come for the reviews, stay for the people.

Oh, and that TC character. I talk about him all the time.

Kevin

I usually refer to it as an online golfing community. If the word online or golfing doesn't cause the glassy eyes, I'll go into more detail about the great people, unbiased reviews and all of the other great reasons to frequent THP. Some of them get it. Some don't. I do push it a bit more with my golf buddies and people who I meet on the course.

Like some others, when I'm asked about it (putter cover, THP shirt and/or hat) I just refer to it as an informative online golfing community. And just as Jon stated - if my playing partners are interested, I'll go into more depth. I don't usually talk too much about THP outside of a few friends who I golf with regularly. Last week during a match with my neighbor, he joked that I had an unfair advantage because of all the knowledge this place gave me, LOL.

I tell people that THP is a golfing community that loves everything about golf. There are reviews about equipment that our forum members so that are nonbiased.

Also, host an annual outing. 70+ members gathering to demo clubs and play lots of golf on a first class resort.

The main point is that we all are family and we have the passion for golf no matter age, race or sex.

Great thread by the way WR. I had to explain THP to a few visitors at the resort that were curious.
